Default Sutherland Phono

Anybody currently or previously running with a Sutherland phono? I would love to hear your thoughts.

I'm sure you know this Greg, but just for the record, those guys at both Fidelis and AV Therapy are fantastic! We're very lucky to have them so close by.

Agreed. They are both great to deal with. We are very lucky. And for what they don’t carry, there is always Ivan, who has always provided great deals and service. I hope to visit him soon.

I had an Acous-tech phono stage designed by Ron Sutherland. I think it was $1200 when I bought it. Sounded very good with my Dynavector 17D3 MC cartridge. Then I upgraded to a McIntosh C 2300 that had a built in phono section. I felt the phono stage in the McIntosh was quieter and more resolving, so out went the Acous-Tech.

As an entry level product, the Acous-tech may not be representative of Ron's other designs.

A lot of Ron's designs use batteries. The PHD has 16 alkaline "D" cells. I think the use of non-rechargeable primary batteries in audio gear is an environmentally unsound practice. There are no good recycling alternatives for alkaline batteries.

That's a really good point on the batteries......I have always been intrigued by Sutherland stages, never read a bad review don't think.
I wanted off grid for my phono stage, so ended up going with Michael Yee designed Nova II. Pitch black background.....

Thought my Nova Phenomena was terrific, so the Nova II should just a bit better. If you want 'off grid' check the offerings from Ray Samuels and K&K Audio (google either/both).
