I suspect there is an issue with DOP processing which actually has DSD data imbedded in a PCM format. When using the USB input I have no issues with DSD, the processing is not done with DOP.

USB is not considered the best connection compared to balanced or coax but (at least) you may find the answer to this problem.
The connection between a McIntosh transport and one of their DACs is proprietary, it's the only way Sony will allow them to transmit SACD over a wire.

Today I visited a McIntosh service center and most likely the issue I have with the SACD playback is due to a failing laser.
The MCT450 has to be sent to McIntosh for service.

I've had laser failures on 2 Denon players. In each case reading the SACD layer is where the problems started before migrating to redbook CD's as well.

A new laser is a straightforward replacement for them. Is the unit under warranty?

Does the connection dictate the digital processing scheme? Is it the only connection type provided on the transport?

I had been dealing with McIntosh support for many years where they had me do everything including soft and full resets, firmware updates etc all in vain and I finally gave up (partially due to COVID lockdown) until I got the new C2700. Now the authorized repair center is working with the McIntosh service manager but so far they are just doing that same things over and over again like resets and firmware updates expecting different results. What was the definition of insanity?

I’m at a point I am going to ask for my C2700 back and they can do whatever they want with the MCT450.

What surprised me is that the repair center was told by the service manager they had never heard of this issue when I had myself clearly worked with this for years in vain and from what I see in this and other boards I’m not the only one with this issues so how can they honestly say they have not heard of this issue before? I feel like I’m in twilight zone.

Additionally, I’m shocked that an authorized repair center doesn’t even have ability to test MCT connection.

I have some great news to share. The service manger from McIntosh was able to work with the local McIntosh authorized repair center and finally fix the issue once and for all: The CD drive assembly was replaced and now it works flawlessly!!

I am so so happy right now. Finally, I am able to play all of my SACDs without the audio drops. Finally, I’m enjoying my C2700 with the MCT450 - in perfect harmony.

Big thank you to John, the McIntosh service manager as well as Chuck the support specialist and my local repair center. McIntosh went above and beyond to troubleshoot and resolve this issue once and for all.

That is fantastic news. I too have always had this exact same issue with my MCT450. Good to know there is a hardware fix. I’m way past any warranty, wonder how much to replace the drive.

Great news indeed but I feel that McIntosh did what they needed to do - in my opinion not above and beyond, but what is expected. Happy for you nonetheless
