I have about 15. Whenever I'm in the mood to buy some music, every couple of days! I always check the XRCD list first. It usually is not there but I always check first. The additional cost does not matter to me since I think they sound so good.

A high quality recording on high quality gear seems to go together like PB&J. What I find revealing is that the needles really dance on the 501's while playing a XRCD and playing the same CD in RB has a much smaller range.

That's because there is much greater dynamic range on XRCD as compared to many dynamic range compressed/loudness mastered CDs out there.

Absolutely! And people question why we need high power amps?

Gordon

Another thought about XRCD is most, not all, seem to be very well mic'd to bring out some very fine imaging

Actually, you do.... The workout my 501s got with some XRCD's was far beyond what they normally would with dynamic range compressed CDs. Get yourself the Sheffield Drum Test XRCD and see how much power your amp and speakers will have to absorb to reproduce it properly.

I'm not sure which is supposed to be better, but my ears say XRCD. Too bad there are so few titles available.

Still one of the best recordings!

Dire Straits XRCD & SACD. Both are dynamic and great! I have 4 versions, inclusive the original redbook and LP!

To me, the XRCD is the best recordings!

It's not so much the difference between the two formats, it is the difference in mastering and what goes into it. You can read about XRCD/XRCD2/XRCD24 here... http://www.elusivedisc.com/xrcdinfo.asp

Technically SACD has the potential to sound better due to it's bigger capacity (>4GB) vs CD (~700MB). Sort of like DVD vs VCD. So if they are both well recorded and mastered, SACD can sound better.

Last month I found a mint version of this LP in a box of albums in the back of a small bookstore in Newtown, PA. I remember it was also the first cd I heard as a demo in a hi fi store in 1981 or 1982. I have to find the SACD or XRCD to compare the two. The album LP was like a time capsule.
