BUT I believe a good 2 channel DAC will invariably sound better than an AVR. There's just less EMI and noise from a high speed HDMI circuit in the same box. Paul said they had to disable video on the DS Transport because it sounded better. And of course the FPGA based discrete chipset in the DS DAC is one of the best I've ever heard.
Currently the AKM4490 in the 8802 is my favorite dac and after many different sacd players in the chain since its inception I can say its the best I've heard and that includes 5.1 native DSD, I found out the later by accident when listening in Pure Direct (never cared for 5.1 much before PCM & Audyssey) with the player set to multi/ch and when the first note played my jaw hit the floor Still I"ll keep my eye on this as its very interesting indeed. Here's the culprit that lead to that 5.1 sacd revelation.

I'm a huge fan of the AKM4490 as well. Even in the reference PCB layout it sounded amazing.

It's my fave by a big margin over Sabre32 et al.

But the DS DAC is truly something special - rivaling my EMM XDS1v1 and Playback MPS5 for a fraction of the price.

I've always dreamed about adding two more MPD5 but would have needed a 5.1 volume control as well. So it remained a pipe dream.
