Any Studer Owners out there?
How does your Studer sound?
Are Studer Machines just for industrial use? What are the electrical power requirements for the bigger Studer Reel to Reels? How will the Studer compare to other machines? Does anyone have an 1 inch or a 2 inch Studer machine? I am thinking about buying another reel to reel and I would love to have a 1 inch or a 2 inch reel to reel. Any additional comments are welcome.

I own 2 1/4" 2 track Studer A810's. They sound very good. Be prepared to have some caps replaced if they already haven't been. They can go pop.

To my knowledge, not the final word, based on my underground radio days in the late '60s and early '70s when the Ampex MM1000s, Scully 280s and Studer A810s were in vogue and heavy use, the 1" and 2" machines were typically 8-16 track for 1", and 24 track for 2" tape.

Scott.......Studer manufactured some of the most widely used professional reel to reel tape machines in the world. Studer, Revox, and Ampex were the work horses of the recording and broadcast industries for years and years. Most of the pro level tape machines can be configured to operate using 1/2", 1" and 2" tape in any number of different record and playback channel configurations. Most pro machines also allow special functions such as releasing the reel brakes and activating the playback head for editing purposes, and control functions that allow for automation in conjunction with special heads that can accommodate tone channels plus the audio channels.
I noticed you said you were looking for a 1" Studer reel to reel tape machine. Usually a 1" tape machine is set up for 8 channel recording and playback, most often with 8 outboard rack mounted preamplifiers set in a roll around cart with the tape machine. These reel to reel machines are large and bulky, but convenient to use if you have the room. Finding a Studer reel to reel configured the way you want will likely prove difficult, particularly finding one that is still in fairly decent condition, or that can be rebuilt providing you can find parts and someone skilled enough to do the work correctly. Of course, there will be limited tape supplies in 1" and 2", as well. Power requirement for US versions of the Studer and Revox machines is 120 volts, and most of the tape machines have a recessed switch on the rear that allows you to select 4 different voltages. The typical load for the multi-channel tape decks is less than 6 amps including outboard preamps. Here's a good photo of a 24 channel 2" tape Studer A800 Mk III.

Well, I am now back from China. It was an excellent trip. I am not sure about purchasing anything. I am just doing some initial research. I do have my two Teac 3340s and have been tweeking their operations. I am interested in developing my own collection of r to r recordings of my more popular Cds/Vinyl. I have looked at some Youtube videos of the Studer machines and they sound great but really more on the high frequency side than the mids and lows; as if you can really tell anything from the audio quality of Youtube. Thinking about it now, I might have been a little over zealous in my aspirations for a Studer. I think I would now like to continue tweeking what I already have to get as close to as possible to a great r to r sound; perhaps a better set of inter connectors or the use of better r to r tape will do the trick. Since it seems that most Studers etc are not in the greatest condition on ebay, I might as well take a different tack. I need to do some more travelling so perhaps I will nixs my original idea. thanks for all your contributions.

Will The Tape Project and other high end reel to reel recordings work on my teac 3340s? Also I am going to see United Home Audio at The Capital Audio Fest this July. They are going to have there reel to reels operating with MBLs. Maybe I can apply some more audiophile techniques to my recording research.
