This is my first foray into the measurements. I must say I am surprised - some good, some bad, and some mysterious.
The first test I ran was Room Analyzer. It measures frequency response from 16 H to 250 H. This is the frequency range where the room itself resonates (google Schroeder Frequency if you just have to) and is basically a hunt for room modes (i.e. peaks resulting from standing waves. I ran this one feeling rather smug as I have 22 ASC tube traps ranging in diameter from 9 inches to 20 inches (almost all are 3 feet long). You can imagine my chagrin when the test showed a huge room mode at 25 H! Now I told myself before this test that I was not going to use any EQ to solve my problems, even though the XTZ program suggested a frequency, a cut and a "Q" to do just that. Of course my "no EQ" was conveniently ignoring that I had used the F113's built in Automatic Room Optimizer when I had installed the subs. Hey, no one's perfect. Then I remembered that the JL Audio Fathoms also had a built in "Extra Low Frequency" adjustment right at 25 H! Long story short, I kept adjusting it to attenuate the 25 H signal and remeasuring until I got this result (so called -12 ELF picture). Then I ran a RTA graph and really got smug. So I went for broke and ran a Full Range test with a RT60 overlay. i got this mysterious result: I can only guess that the long RT60 at 4,000H and 8,000H is my low (7 feet) ceiling bouncing everything. I will have to add absorption there. I have no idea why in the world the rest of it measures so short. It certainly does not sound dead in here. |

Maybe not. The subs in two channel are very noticeably improved. I am listening to The Girl In The Other Room kind of slack jawed. The bass is musical, the percussion is sharp, the piano is cleaner and the midrange is smoother. All that from removing a room mode hump at 25H together with its associated modal ringing? Wow!!

That's great Randy! Just don't let all the data drive you crazy. Ask me how I know!

Yeah, run your REW with NO SMOOTHING and you'll see how far up the creek you really are!
Just remember, they only THINK they heard it right in the recording studio! |

Super cool. Good luck.
I'll enjoy you experience - please keep us posted. A bit of a roadmap to things that will come. So far all trail and error more me. Big believer in treatments even with my crude approach. Ed |

However, crowing aside I am going to rerun them as I am unsure about a few things - mainly too low a volume at the test. It was in the green, but not up to 90 dB. |

Running the tests at good volumes hurts my ears. I have sat there with my fingers in my ears during the sweeps or just put on ear protection. |

Gary, any idea why my RT60 is so short for some frequencies and then over 4 seconds for 4,000H and 8,000H?

I calibrate the REW with pink noise to 75dB before I run any sweeps. Even then I also hold my fingers in ears when I run the full spectrum sweeps.
