In my younger days, I would drive about 50,000 miles a year in a 1981 BMW 528i which I averaged about 25mpg. I finally gave the car to some friends in NJ when the car had over 700,000 miles on it(same engine and no rebuild). Then I switched to a 1985 MB 300SD that has near 350,000 miles averaging about 30mpg. I am giving that car to some friends who live in MD. Now I am driving a 1991 MB 350SD which has near 225,000 miles on it averaging about 28mpg. Needless to say, I prefer diesels.

'13 Corvette Grand Sport - 16 - 25, city - Highway
'13 E350 4matic -17- 30
'13 Ford Explorer Sport FWD - 17 - 24

These are typical. The Explorer and the Grand Sport can both deliver lower numbers if pushed hard. The Explorer's turbos will eat gas if used often! On my recent track day, I got 7 mpg with the Grand Sport!

6.2L but not with that crappy active fuel management garbage (less power, less responsive).

In NorCal - it is stop and go. It sucks. But when there's no traffic, it is quite nice (thankfully most of my driving is freeway and 'against the grain' of traffic).

David.......Wow, those vehicles all had/have some serious miles on them. Diesel engines do seem to just keep on running.

Craig.......Thanks. I am surprised at the Corvette's highway mileage. That's pretty good.

My Tahoe LTZ window sticker says 15 mpg city / 23 mpg highway / 18 mpg combined. I am getting that and a little better most of the time. It has a 26 gallon fuel tank.

Especially considering there is a great deal of rubber on the road. Aerodynamics and reasonably low weight help

My tuned '07 Corvette got 30MPG on cruise at 70MPH. Slightly different motor but taller gears makes the difference between it and the '13 GS.

BMW 330i (petrol). Around 20mpg in day to day use, but being fair, that's in very bad city traffic. On the long runs we're had (e.g. into Holland), we were getting 30mpg.

efficiency as to power, yes……. but that does not translate into ones best mpg.

Not sure if you're old enough but back forty plus years ago during the first big 'energy crunch' one of the most popular accessory gauges being sold was a vacuum gauge. Buy doing ones best to maintain as high a manifold pressure as possible maximized the efficiency (mpg) of the engine.
