My trip to Audio Classics yesterday landed me a beautiful McIntosh C35 PreAmp that has allowed me to largely complete a mid '80's vintage system. It also includes a set of Infinity RS IIa speakers that I am the second owner of (my good friend first bought them from Woodbridge Audio in 1983). They are powered by a pair of Threshold S/200 class A (up to 30 wpc) amplifiers, also from Woodbridge Audio and circa 1983. This is not their intended location but is my proof of concept before hauling it all to our condo. Currently using a Denon (1996) DVD-5000 as the source. At the condo, I will only use a Sonos connect as the source, streaming Deezer and FLAC from a local laptop. K.I.S..S.

It sounds sublime. I love the sound of class A on these Infinities.

The DVD5000 is still one hell of a DAC.

Lousy transport (could never read CD-Rs) but spectacular DVD player. I remember the composite output on that thing just destroyed the competition that had component outputs at the time - it was that drastic.

Feed it well.

This DVD-5000 has been back and forth across the Pacific Ocean two times and was one of my first real expensive electronics purchases It was SOTA in 1996 for Dolby Digital decoding and video playback at a time I was combining my theater with two channel systems due to living in an apartment. I spent about $2,000 on it in Hong Kong - that is why it is gold. Along with a Denon AVR 3600 receiver, my system was pretty hot at the time. The DVD-5000 has rarely been used for the last 7 years and the AVR3600 receiver is a 220 volt only paper weight. I did have to replace two capacitors in the DVD player which was an exploratory, albeit successful effort on my part. It stopped working, I opened it up and saw two burned capacitors. Found exact replacements at Digikey, bought a solder gun and fixed it. It made me feel good bringing it back from the dead.

But the receiver never properly handled my RS IIa speakers and that led me to the purchase of my first McIntosh amplifier, the MC7106 which I purchased in Seoul Korea in early 1997 at the height of the Asian currency crisis. I paid $2500 for the $3500 amp. Currency arbitrage worked for me!

Craig, before I got the Infinity rs1b's I had rsIIb driven by two Nestorovic monoblocks. The sound was quite superb, only achieved after trying more power amplifiers than I care to remember. The pre was the ARC SP11 (I was at that time trading as Highland Analogue). Even now I think back to that time with great affection.

Craig, that's an awesome system.

I have a Denon DVD-5900 and still use it. It has a great DAC and makes for a nice transport.

Getting things settled in their new home. I have the system running in our bonus room in SC and it sounds good. These old Infinities reward space and Class A power. Here are some pictures from today. I have a TEAC UD-503 DAC on its way so I can stream all my files via an old Dell laptop using JRMC 21. With a soon to be purchased rack and some cables I will largely be done.
