Too Noisy Fish - Furious Empathic Silence
Qobuz 24/44.1 They had a good time in the studio for sure! Experimental sounds go together with good piano trio jazz. This is no easy listening. I saw these 3 a while ago. Fantastic concert.

Mischa Tsiganov - Playing With The Wind
Brilliant playing, and some very complex rhythms. Very enjoyable.

Oh yes! Solo double bass albums are few and far between. Those who have dared to venture into the barren territories are mostly adventurous jazzmen: Barre Phillips, Joëlle Léandre, Malachi Favors, Alan Silva, William Parker, Dave Holland, Michael Formanek, Miroslav Vitous, Ron Carter, Eberhard Weber, Henri Texier, Renaud Garcia-Fons, Jonas Hellborg and so on. The American musician Larry Grenadier has played with famous names such as Paul Motian or Pat Metheny, though most will know him for his work from the 25 years that he spent in Brad Mehldau’s Trio. Recorded at Avatar Studios in New York and produced by Manfred Eicher from ECM, The Gleaners is the result of introspection. "The process for making this record began with a look inward, an excavation into the core elements of who I am as a bass player", writes Grenadier in the cover notes. "It was a search for a center of sound and timbre, for the threads of harmony and rhythm that formulate the crux of a musical identity." He adds that it was originally Eicher’s idea, being a trained bassist himself. "Few people truly know how to treat the double bass sonically in the studio, but Manfred concentrates on bringing out its special qualities. In making The Gleaners, he was important in the editing and the mix, really helping me to shape the album." Larry Grenadier uses several techniques and tunings here to make the record come alive and offers up a vast sound palette. With seven original compositions (including one, Pettiford, which is dedicated to the double bassist Oscar Pettiford, his childhood idol), a cover of Gershwin's My Man's Gone Now and a medley of John Coltrane's Compassion and Paul Motian's The Owl of Cranston, The Gleaners displays a rather wide array of emotions and is beautifully unique. © Marc Zisman/Qobuz

Shai Maestro - The Dream Thief
Qobuz 24/96 ECM albums are always a good choice to end the evening... Following four albums that have helped established him on the contemporary jazz scene, Shai Maestro is taking a major step by combining with the ECM label. Still in a trio with his double bass accomplice Jorge Roeder and drummer Ofri Nehemya (who replaces regular Ziv Ravitz), the Israeli pianist is once again going down the path of sublime multi-layered narratives. The melodies are taken from jazz as well as Eastern traditional music, and even Western classical music. Whether he feels introspective (on Israeli Matti Caspi’s My Second Childhood) or overtly provocative (surprising interpretation of the classic These Foolish Things), he has kept his soft touch and refined musical language. Ever since 2012, when he released the first album with him as the frontman, his profoundly personal aesthetic has continued to impress. He possesses a strong narrative force and stays well wired into the times, like on the final composition What Else Needs To Happen?, in which Shai Maestro very subtly inserts the voice of Barack Obama giving a speech about gun control. © Marc Zisman/Qobuz .

Robin Verheyen - When The Birds Leave
via Qobuz We've just booked tickets to see this splendid saxophonist later this month (with Joey Baron and Bram De Looze!). This is an album he recorded last year, with the fabulous Marc Copland and Billy Hart. Drew Gress I didn't know that well, but his playing is solid.
