Excellent Dan. Good to know. If I get a chance to try a similar speaker with a higher efficiency would be a good idea. For now I am real happy with the MC, but if I have an opportunity of trying a speaker with 90 dB efficiency it would not be a bad idea ...

Way way off topic.....but this is just something you never ever want to hear a Scoutmaster say these days......

Higher efficiency > Less distortion > Higher sound quality

I don't know about that. I have heard many high efficient speakers which I do not consider higher sound quality. Back in the day the best sounding speakers to me were almost always at the opposite end of the spectrum. Low efficiency speakers were usually more accurate sound quality. The typical high efficiency speaker, many times horn loaded were not my cup of tea, so to speak.
Therefore finding a higher efficiency speaker with super accuracy (European sound) would be the Holy Grail for me .... |

Simple physics. Lower efficiency speakers causes more moving mass, especially the diaphragm. The more the diaphragm moves the more distortion is created. Less detail and transient response. However, some people apparently like the resulting sound.

I like it. Add Stillpoints to the bottom the feet for a more comfortable seating experience.

I have been seriously considering saving up for a new amplifier.... something like the Audio Research VT-80, for example. However I have a deep concern. After listening to the ARC and back to the FW, the ARC is good, but there is just something special in the sound of Nelson Pass's "kitchen amp".
I am afraid that I am going to spend thousands and get an amp with more power, but that does not actually sound better. This is a dilemma for me since listening to different amps just can not work... no dealers around, etc. |

Randy
If you don't need more power for those speakers and your living situation why pay for it. The VT-50 is a fine sounding amp and considering the Factory rebuild and new tubes that someone else paid for you got a deal. All ARC amps will have a similar signature with the same type of tube. If you want to try something different buy a set of Gold Lion KT-88's and try them. They will sound different and I prefer them to 6550's. Be happy until or if you move in another speaker direction that requires it. As someone who has been through entirely to much gear in the last 3 years it gets expensive plus the search sometimes is more satisfying than the purchase. |
