You want to trade speakers for a day or two?
I used to have Sonus Faber speakers and their playback levels compared to the PMCs are different. The Cremona is one of my favorites. Cremona you crank them up to get more sound from them. The OB1i sounds full range in low volume levels to medium volume level. They are two different animals and like them both. --Levi |

Double F.......Without accurate, and equal speaker level adjustments, simply switching speakers will only demonstrate part of the truth. The switch box is a good thing, but often the speaker that is loudest tends to sound better in that type of A/B test. Identical SPL's are important in revealing the true differences.

Double F, looking forward to the results of your experience with both SF Cremona and PMC. Which model PMC will you be auditioning in your system??

You are 100% correct that the louder speaker or piece of gear that sounds louder will be perceived as being better. BUT, not every speaker sounds good at the same dB level. Just picking a level and comparing two or more speakers at that dB level could give one speaker an advantage over another. I do not think there is any one single method to compare speakers.

j3brow, It will be the OB1i. Jdandy, I have a Niles Selector with Volume adjustment for each switch. Using my trust Radio Shack SPL meter I should be able to adjust the levels fairly close with a test tone. I will not be able to use my 501s for the audition because the Niles can only handle 100 WPC. The MC122 will be coming out of the home theater system for this bout.

For example, if a speaker has a low frequency lift, it should sound better at lower levels due to the Fletcher-Munson effect, but if you generally listen at higher levels, that advantage will dissipate and the extra boost could become a liability. So listening at only one level could make for a mismatched playing field, and I think your inference that multiple matched levels would be needed makes the most sense.

Double F........You didn't originally tell us about the volume adjustments for each switch on the Niles box. That is a good thing. You should still be able to use your MC501 amplifiers, just pay attention to your peak levels, and keep them under 100 watts.
Both Jim and Schefer11 have good points with respect to how different speakers sound better at one volume level verses another speaker. I am sure you will have fun with this demo of the PMC OB1i and the Sonus Faber Cremona. My vote is for the PMC OB1i, but I am a huge PMC fan. Keep us posted.
