I already have a pair of Gold Lions that he told me to take out of the C 220 and compare to the stock, but I'm pretty sure the stocks won't be nearly as good....not to mention the Gold Lions are already broken in.

I love the armchair loading options for both MC and MM carts. Anyway, enjoy your new preamp, it's a big step up from the 220.

The Chinook has got a fantastic reputation.....it's in my nature to compare and see what the difference in the sound of the two would be, but jeeezzzz, got to sit down and enjoy some tunes eventually and stop tweaking, so I'm going to do my best to not compare, but I have no will power. We'll see. I've seen several people recommend some Amperex tubes for the Chinook.....I may try that and see what happens.

Special thanks to Dan for some good advice on preamps as well. Looking forward to breaking it in!
I made the same exact upgrade. It is a major upgrade in my opinion. The 2300 is a true Mac classic. It represents decades of improvements that are tried and true. Enjoy!

So what were some of the improvements that you heard when you made the upgrade? It's been awhile since I've made an amp/preamp upgrade....gettin' antsy, should be here on Thursday!

José.......Thank you. I don't know, maybe the name Santander came to me in a dream. .

As for the phono stage preamps, it is my understanding from a qualified McIntosh source that they are the same. In fact, other than the DAC section of the C2500, I have been told the C2300 and the C2500 sound identical. This is reliable information from a trusted source who has auditioned both in his store. I have not had the opportunity to make an A/B comparison of the two preamps myself.

Before I got my C2300, I had a C220. The first upgrade I did to the C220 was to trade it in for a new C2300 before I could even open the box yes, I took home a brand new C220 home from a local Mac dealer. Few hours of thinking, I said to myself, what the heck you only live once and this is probably the last preamp I will ever own.So, I brought back the C220 and got the C2300 and never look back and until now I'm glad I made the upgrade.

I have NOS Amperex in my 2300 line stage and MM. No complaints so far; the ones in the line stage are breaking in still. Perhaps a bit less bass over the JJs they replaced, and a bit more open. The ones in the MM stage are broken in but I haven't played many LPs yet.

Mike.......That's a great story. Reading it made me smile. You're right, you only live once. The C2300 was obviously meant to be in your life. You made a wise choice. I know I won't be parting with my C2300.

I can almost say for certain I will never 'consciously unconnect' from my C2300.
