Default ?Ethernet cable for your N10

Ok, here goes.

I've got a CAT 7, 10GB, 600MHz cable...reasonable generic quality...it's 15M and runs from the N10 back to the router. And, a shorter version of the same cable running from my router to my service outlet in the wall.

The Aurender sounds great to my ears now.

My required length prohibits me from buying expensive Ethernet cables (but I likely could be persuaded otherwise...apologies to SWMBO in advance).

I'm a big believer in quality cables...I'm just trying to figure out Ethernet cables now.

What are you using? Noticed any difference if you swap brand/quality tiers? Anyone with a long run? What are you using on your long run? Does the run length make a difference?

FWIW, I did try Ethernet over Power, but there were dropouts when the clothes dryer ran (!) and, most importantly, direct cabling sounded better.

Thanks, ed

Hi Medwardo, you should look into FMC ( Fiber Optic ) for the long runs, Fiber optic cables are really really cheap and off great isolation for one and use high quality ethernet cables from router to FMC- FMC to dac of .5 meter runs. Use batteries or LPSU for the FMC to further isolate and reduce noise.

For further info on FMC check out numerous post at CA.

Using a higher grade ($1,000) CAT6a/7 cable vs. cheaper ($15) CAT6a cable makes absolutely no difference at all in this specific use case.

Can you mention a case or cases where a higher grade ($$$$) Ethernet cable makes a difference?

This is an interesting thread. I recently became a solid believer that interconnects, speaker cable, and power cables make a big difference.

Blueoak,
Do you believe any cables in an audio system make a difference, or is you belief just with Ethernet cables? Are USB cables the same as lan cords because they also just carry data?
Thanks,
Mike

With a Melco streamer you can use the ethernet port to stream music to a DAC (Ayre QX-5 for instance) here you might be able to hear a difference in network cables.

It should be the "better" connection method compared to SPDIF/USB

Build quality (especially the connectors) can differ, but what I understand (and that's the point I tried to make), TCP/IP is the superieur connection compared to USB/SPDIF

Melco call it Direct Streaming Music (DSM), and also use a "ethernet purifier"

From their website:

- Dual Ethernet ports - dedicated PLAYER port and LAN port
- Direct Mode allows N1 to connect to Player without any Router
(Melco gives IP address to Player)
- RJ-45 with low noise light pipe LED indicators (not optical signal transmission !)
- Micro miniature high performance network pulse transformers
- Audio grade ultra-low jitter internal data clock
- High data integrity and precision low jitter clock buffer
- FPGA voltage control system

I am diverting a bit from the original topic, but with the Aurenders I agree that another network cable will not improve the sound, but using a Melco it might be possible if you directly stream to a DAC with DSM.

Anyway this discussion gives me food for thought regarding my next DAC, probably I would like one that has all the options SPDIF, USB, TCP/IP so I can use/try all of them.

Option 1 sounds logical, as the Melco player gives the IP address to the player.
