Yep............ With software/firmware, the customer is always the true beta-tester.

Best thing of all would be to avoid designing equipment with OS controls in the first place. For decades McIntosh had steadfastly resisted new technology until perfected. For a relatively small house, any miscalculation could have dire business consequences. The old guard knew this well. The loss "SelectaVision" video disc system cost RCA, for example, would have wiped McIntosh out many times over.

In the fullness of time, no doubt these issues will be a thing of the past. Until then, this technology, such as it is, has no place in a McIntosh product. Period.

My sincere views on this matter.

I know Microsoft puts beta copies of products like a new release of Windows out to a fairly large group of testers, who report issues, and when those issues reported get below a certain threshold, they approve the software for deployment to the public.

Though McIntosh is a "large" audio company, as companies who deploy software, they are really small, and probably don't have a staff of in house programmers.

So have dropped it off to the NZ importers. Looks like it will be about two weeks to be looked at, let alone fixed. Oh well...
After about 3 months of working perfectly (after they rebooted and updated the firmware) it got stuck in no-man's land again. VU meters and red lights stuck on, with no response.

Took it back to the importers and they redid the firmware. All OK, but tests showed that after a few days of not using it, in standby mode, it crapped out again. It seems that as long as I used/turned it on daily I had no problems. Leave it for a few days without use, as I did recently and wammo...problems.

The importers, Soundgroup NZ, working with McIntosh USA to resolve this problem, decided that a new microprocessor was needed and that the simplest would be to replace the whole board.
They even did it under warranty gratis. Not bad considering it was a secondhand item, likely over the three year warranty period.

I can't thank Soundgroup and McIntosh enough for their speedy response and help in resolving my preamp's issues. Well done!

Oh no, its just started playing up again, twice in the last week.

Same problem, stuck in tube warm up mode, so requires a repower, after which it works ok - for a while.

Hopefully, it won't get stuck in red lights permanently fixed mode...

I don’t know if it’s the same issue, but if I adjust the volume on my C2300 as it’s warming up, it gets stuck. I’ve learned to turn the volume down before I turn it off.

Mike........I don't touch my volume control on the C2300 until the tube warmup display goes off. Then volume ramps up automatically to the last setting. After that I adjust the volume if needed. I have never had any issues.

Default C2500 stuck in tube warmup mode

Dan,

That’s correct and exactly how I’ve been doing it since the first week or so after owning my C2300 when I first noticed an issue. There’s a bug in the firmware of the C2300 (or at least non-desirable behavior) that if you adjust the volume while in warm-up, it locks up. I spoke with Chuck about this years ago. I’m mentioning this in case this behavior carried over to the C2500.

No, I'm not adjusting the volume while in warm-up.

Maybe if I did it wouldn't lock up!

You would think that after a board replacement, it wouldn't happen again, so I'm guessing its a glitch in the software.

Each time I turn it on now I cross my fingers, and wait in trepidation and hope that it doesn't get stuck in warm-up mode.

NOT a good way to start listening to music...
