Default Cary SLP-05

Ok, Cary people help me out. I'm seriously thinking about getting this preamp, but I haven't heard one. I've never had any Cary products. I will be pairing this with Classe' CA M600 mono amps, driving Salon 2's. What kind of sonic descriptions describe this preamp. I've read a bunch of reviews , but I would rather hear from people who own one, or have spent time listening to one.

Thanks,
Mark

Mark, the SLP-05 is a great preamp. I have owned several tubed preamps and this is the best, by far. You can get a used one for about $4k which is a great price for this unit.

Mark,

I am looking for a preamp as well. Never owned or heard Cary equipment before. I recently auditioned the SLP 05 at a dealer's location for about 30 minutes. It was connected to a Krell cd player and two NewClear 500 W Class D amps. Speakers were Usher BE20s.

I sampled few songs from Dire Straits, Madeleine Peyroux, Mariza, and the trance band Above & Beyond. I am not an expert, but the preamp sounded neutral and quite detailed for most of the tracks. Highs were not bright, and easy to listen.

The trance tracks by Above & Beyond sounded a little dull and did not seem to have the speed or sharpness that I am accustomed to with trance music. However, it could have been the amps or the speakers.

I am thinking of auditioning it at my home for a detailed listening. I will be interested to know your impressions should you get a chance to audition this.

I'll simply say this: Of all the components in my system, the SLP-05 will be the last thing I replace, if I ever do. All the gushing reviews are spot on.

I'm running a Cary SLP-98P F1, however, I think that Cary preamps mate very well with solid state amps. Personally, I like VAC preamps better with tube amps, but Cary's extra midrange bloom, or *magic*,seems to work better with solid state amps.

Thanks everybody !!! I don't know if I will be able to audition one in person, that's why I was wondering how it sounds compared to other preamps you have owned.
