I don't want to leave the impression that I condone any actions of the type the instructor said the woman touted.

My limited research into CCW left me with the idea that if you discharge a firearm and wound or kill a human, you are going to jail. Or at least it is highly likely that you will go to jail. It might be for a few hours or it could be for a very long time.
Your ability to know what is or isn't 'within the law' at a highly tense time is very important - critical. However, it is not even that simple. You become depending on the state, fully dependent upon the district attorney and the justice system. And yet further, you may still be liable to civil actions by the victim or their family. So, Yes, no matter what, your life will will change for ever. If and when I purchase a handgun, it will be after I feel comfortable that my wife and I know how to handle it and we will only keep it in our home for self defense. That is a decision I reached after researching the laws and how they work or not. It is my choice and my choice only. It is not a statement on anyone else's choice.

If you end up in a shooting, you may, or may not, end up in jail. Everyone claims you are going to jail, simply not true. You may, or may not, end up involved in a civil lawsuit. Both of these situations depend on the circumstances of the shooting.
If a person has shown the intent, is in the proximity, and has the ability to cause you great harm or death, in most cases you can defend yourself. Some places you have a duty to retreat, others you do not, learn what the laws are where you live. It goes a long way if it is a good shooting defined by law, and you have the ability to articulate why it was. When you take firearms training from a good instructor, you will learn safety, you will learn when you can use lethal force, and you will learn to make sure you are the one that walks away. The reputation of your instructor might also come into play. I've had extensive firearms training and my main instructor was a thirty years LAPD officer. He was the primary instructor for special divisions for years and he was an expert witness in the use of deadly force. That's the kind of guy you want on your side if you are involved with the DA's office. I've never advocated gun ownership, i've always advocated as much firearms training as you can afford if you do decide to become a gun owner.
