I broke one a couple of years ago and replaced the entire binding post. Be careful and not over-tighten. It is easy to do with the wrench.

I just broke the 8 ohm positive post on my week old MC462. I got the threaded end that broke out of the post on the amp. and grabbed a threaded cap from another tap. In 35 plus years of owning high end amps I have never broken a binding post. These post are a very thin metal that is gold plated with a plastic center. I plan on calling Mcintosh Monday morning and seeing about getting a replacement.

They don't sell just the screw part that broke so you'll be getting the entire binding post. They're $50 each plus a few bucks for shipping. I ordered two of them. Wanted to have an extra just in case I break another one down the road.

What makes you say they have a plastic center?

I doubt it's plastic, but it looks dark grey. I suppose it could be easily mistaken for plastic. Whatever metal it is, it's seems a bit weak. I suspect some form of casting involved.

I looked inside the post that broke off. It looks white in color. If this is metal in there I would guess it's maybe zinc. I have seen zinc screws snap like that.

I responded to your post because you said that the binding post was gold plated with a plastic center and I have serious doubts regarding your statement. Statements like this are how internet rumors spread. What did McIntosh say when you called them?

I am not happy with these bind posts and am think about replacing them with a set of Edison price binding post. BTW I don't like being accused of being some sort in conspiracy theorist nut job. |

Well guys, whatever the internal material is made from suffice it to say it doesn't take over-tightening very well.
