I just purchased a nice turntable, Vandersteen 7 speakers, and ARC 2 channel system - pre-amp (that offers XLR vs RCA pass through) and mono block amps and have a Marantz 8002. I was thinking of getting a McIntosh MX-150/151 to replace my old receiver along with an Oppo 105 to replace my old DVD player along with a new Control 4 unit. Maybe the 8801 would be better. I see that the amp is separate for this unit, and I have the L/R channels covered, so not sure what would be the best way to provide amplification to the center channel, 2 surround channels, and sub (1 or 2). Any thoughts?

I'm quite happy with my MX150 for theater duty. Most subs today are powered, so you will only need amplification for your center & surrounds.

I re-read the posts as I am contemplating a Marantz 8801 vs McIntosh MX151. I would like to think the Marantz is as good given the huge price difference. If I understand correctly, if both units were the same price and money were not part of the equation, the McIntosh is best for a 5.1 system because it sounds a little bit better and has better room correction, but the Marantz is best for those who want more channels than a 5.1. Is that it in a nutshell?

I think the Marantz has better DACs. Now, if they make an audible difference is another story!
