Default Legacy Whisper XD Speakers Opinions

Was curious if anyone has experieince with the Legacy Whisper XD loudspeakers on the forum. Would be interested in any feedback on anyone who has them in their system or had an opportunity to listen to these speakers.

I auditioned the Legacy Whispers in Casselberry, FL some years back and was impressed. I'm not even sure exactly when this was, I want to say 7 or 8 years ago anyway. I also listened to the Legacy focus and a few other Legacy models at that time. The owner of the store had a pair of Whispers in his home, and he invited me over for a listen. They did not carry the XD designation at that time. The fellow that gave the demonstration felt that with its open woofer design, the system, although breathtaking, really performed better with a subwoofer, that they were a bit "thin" without. (kind of hard to imagine that, given the size of this speaker and its driver compliment). In that regard he also had a Legacy subwoofer set up in his home with the Whispers. The speakers were very impressive indeed...and large! I brought a few of my favorite CD's along for the audition. I would add too that the cabinetry and workmanship were also quite impressive. I'd say if you have the room, and the funds for these speakers, they would certainly be worth a listen. I was interested just enough at the time to make the drive from Tampa Bay area to Casselberry to give them a listen.

I've read in a few reviews that the bass was different (thin) in the past versions of the Whisper. It appears there have been changes to the driver compliment, active crossover, and now it includes a 500W internal amplifier for the bass section. Also appears that they have been getting good feedback on the Whisper XD at past audio shows.

I would prefer not to add a separate subwoofer in my system, but the sound staging and wide sweet spot makes these speakers interesting to me.

Would be interested in knowing more about the 24bit processor.

I heard the latest Legacy Whisper XD at their LA dealer last week.
It had the internal 500W internal amps, and the DSP processor.

The speaker handled everything I threw at it, and I came away very impressed.
It produces a solid sound stage, with very nice depth and width- in fact it was borderline spooky how well it recreates the recorded performance.

The XD version of the Whisper had plenty of bass- deep, musical and quick as well, no cabinet resonating after the bassist plays a note.

I had them show me the processor in action, plenty of control over the response of the speaker.

How big is your room?

My room size is 11ft wide by 23ft long. Hoping to get an opportunity to listen to the Legacy speakers at THE SHOW this week along with other speakers of consideration. The processor is my concern seems like it complicates the system. I need to see and hear it in action.

Hello! I see you got the Legacy Whisper XD speakers. What are your impressions of the speakers, and how do they mate with your McIntosh tube amps?

Would be very interested to know as I also own the Whisper XD and am searching for a suitable amp for it. (currently I'm using it alternately with the Ayon Triton or Pass Labs XA100.5).

Cheers...

Hi karsajid,

Welcome to AA!

Please tell me about your Triton. I've been looking at some Ayon amps and believe they are wonderful. I definitely want to hear one soon.
