Default Let’s get philosophical

Looking beyond this unprecedented event we are facing today, what if any lifestyle changes will you make in your life as we exit this dark tunnel?

Don’t be shy, open up and let’s get philosophical. It really helps to open up and share ideas, dreams and everything else that is on your mind.

Please keep politics out of this. It is neither the time nor the place for that.

Simply share what you envision will change in your life.

I’ll go first.

I’ve been living in PA for over 35 years now. I think it’s time to make a move and change the scenery.

Looking forward to making a move to perhaps NC to be in or near Asheville area and all the glorious nature of the Appalachian trail. I want to spend more time outdoors, do more hiking, enjoy long drives on the blue ridge parkway perhaps some fishing... It is an idea I’ve been entertaining for some time but now I feel it is time to make it a reality. Hoping the housing market holds to be able to sell and buy a house.

I’ve also re-evaluated some priorities in life and came to some conclusions. More fresh air, less stress. Simplify my life and enjoy more of the things that bring peace and harmony to the soul rather than focusing on those things that bring stress while chasing rewards... Oh yes, of course I will always keep a 24 roll of TP stashed away just in case!

How about you?

Appreciate the family, friends, my law firm and practice, my clients and my music even more. Work harder on political campaigns.

Don’t know if I’ll ever go fly fishing abroad again. I was supposed to be in the Seychelles from March 14 to March 26, on a boat/ship with 10 anglers, 15 crew members and 5 or so guides, 600 miles due east of Somalia in the middle of the Indian Ocean. It’s a beautiful place with unimaginable fish and a crazy experience. I’ve fished there, Argentina, Russia, Alaska, British Columbia, all over Europe, Mexico, Cuba, etc., et al. I will definitely think twice before going that far from home for a fishing trip again, where I could get very stuck for a very long time.

I suspect this will fade, but right now, I am oh so glad not to be in the tiny airport in Mahe, Seychelles trying to figure out how to get the f&ck out of there. The other thing is that my family and team at work would have been (a) here in the middle of all this without me, and (b) worried sick and working to get me home. I will think twice before I risk putting them through that for something as selfish as a fly fishing trip. Now, I just have to fight with the insurance company to get back a big passel of dough.

Great question though. I have immensely enjoyed being with the family, and appreciate the opportunity to do so, although I wish it were under other circumstances.

I wouldn't mind moving to the Desert Southwest. Some place like Scottsdale, AZ or Santa Fe, NM.

If I didn't have to stay in the Bay Area to be nearby my 94 yr old Mom in a nursing home, I'd be outta the Bay Area.

So, yeah, a change of scene would be nice.

Default Let’s get philosophical

Four years ago I ditched my soul-sucking corporate job and moved from a 4600 sq ft house in an upscale suburban neighborhood in Minneapolis to a small house in a mountain town 3 hours SW of Denver Colorado.

Here I can hike, fly fish and mountain bike out of my front door and the nearest ski hill is only 30 minutes away up Monarch pass. Breckenridge, Beaver Creek, Vail, and Copper are 1:45 away.

There have been trade-offs along the way for sure, like moving from a Culinary Mecca to a place that has only a few good restaurants. Like two. So we schedule foodie trips into Denver once a month to pick up what we are missing.

I now work mostly for buy-side private equity firms. I work from home with very limited travel.

Our kids still live near Minneapolis, and we have a lake home in Wisconsin where we spend some time in the summer.

Not entirely sure what’s next for us - just enjoying the present.

I retired a few years early than planned (because it became ‘time’) and am blessed to have chosen to move from NE PA to the Low Country of SC. Our community is small and close. It affords us many benefits that others may not have. I am able to be safe, ride my bike, listen to music, play golf and relax in comfort and relative safety. I fully appreciate many in the country and across the world do not have those luxuries.

Hopeful our country and the world returns to a safe ‘new’ normal

I have traveled the world and vow to continue to do it again. I won’t be swayed by this virus.

I wish to volonteer. And the timing is just right with the pandemic. There is a shortage of volonteers in my province and our PM today made the call to all those who are in good health and have time to offer some support to different organizations to raise hand. I did. While I do enjoy my work as a project manager in a large steel factory up here, I wish to do something more meaningful instead of sitting arms crossed watching the show. Since March 24 00:01, our province is in shut down until April 13 as all non-priority businesses were ordered to close. There is a fight going on and I want to be on the front line, whatever my assignment would be. Beyond this pandemic, I hope this experience to bring me to do develop other aspects of my personality; I have always been someone quite logic focusing on performance and efficiency (background in QA) but later in my life I discovered other aspects of me that were buried deep inside but just needed to be dug out. I wish to help others, with empathy and compassion. If I could, I would ditch everything and would like to work for the UN for refugees abroad, or Unicef or the likes. Sometimes, when I think about my work I realize that my job's purpose is for the company to make profit that in turn give me the money I need for my lifestyle. To some extent, I find it shallow and it does not bring me the balance or inner peace I strive for in my life. Thinking about it, if I can bring all my experience and drive to a common goal to help others, that would be it.

My wife and I have 14 acres in a very rural area in the foothills of the Cascades. The nearest real town with shopping is 45 minutes away, but we usually were making that drive for one reason or another 3-4 times per week. In the last couple of weeks, I’ve been reminded of the pleasures of our little hermitage: long walks with our dog, the quiet of country life, and the small pleasures of getting things done that were put off for too long. We also used to go out for fine dining regularly, but have recently found much pleasure in take-out from a small local place, and knowing we’re helping to support a local friend’s business. For the future? Continue to support local small businesses and less Amazon, plan my time better to be home more to enjoy what I have, support local non-profits, invest more in political efforts consistent with our values, and continue my work as a board member of our local United Way.
