Favorite 'drummer' would be Henley; not at all for his drumming, but rather for his song-writing and singing skilz (Collins would seem to qualify based on same criteria, but 'su-su-suddio' makes me vomit every time I hear it).
For drumming, I'd pick Nick Mason, probably because with the exception of the opening to Learning to Fly and just a couple of other tunes, I don't notice the drums, which is fine by me. |

John Bonham hands down for me with his odd time signatures and catchy grooves.

I've had a few lessons with Virgil Donati. For a technical drummer he is a freak of nature with skills I cannot even begin to comprehend!
While I was studying music in London our class went to see Chad Smith perform a Master Class. Being in a class of extremely talented and technical drummers there was a bit of snobbery from the group as they did not hold Chad in high esteem as a precision drummer (rock drummer)! While Chad is certainly not the most technically advanced drummer, he completely blew us all away! Even all the technical snobs in the group were mesmerised by his pure power and stage presence. He simply made the drum kit come alive and was a pure entertainer! He was simply awesome and we didn't want the show to end! I had the pleasure of meeting Chad Smith and he was one of the nicest and coolest guys I have met!

Gotta go with Max Wineberg. There may be more exciting drummers but you have to give this guy credit for keeping the beat going for the +250 different songs Bruce sings on his latest tours most of which run from 3 1/2 to 4 hours. He's been doing this for 40+ years.

Buddy Rich to be sure.
He has the smoothest rolls and fastest hands, keeps interesting rhythms throughout his solos. Max Weinberg is also an unsung drumming hero. |
