Jungle of Stone by William Carlsen

Non-fiction story of John L. Stephens and Frederick Catherwood who explored the Maya heartland in the 1830s & 40s. An amazing story of adventure and the era, as well as of the Maya themselves. Read most of it while traveling earlier this month through the northern Yucatan, where we visited some of the same sites, such as Uxmal, Chichen Itza, Merida and Tulum.

Hello. I am presently reading Jaco, The Extraordinary and Tragic Life of Jaco Pastorius by Bill Milkowski as I am listening to Weather Report's Mr. Gone in the background.

This is a fantastically well written and researched book. After reading a library copy I purchased the hardcover edition for my permanent collection.

If you randomly asked 100 people what they knew about Guadalcanal I suspect only a handful might be aware of the details of the horrendous naval surface battles that occurred.

This is due in large part to the US government's decision to suppress news of the casualties and ship losses, fearing its effects on national morale and popular support of the war.

As a Marine I have always taken pride in the USMC victory and its place in our history, but it is a shame the Navy has never received their due credit. Navy casualties suffered in the surface engagements far exceeded those of the Marines ashore, and included the only two admirals to be killed during all of WW II.

I cannot recommend this book more highly.

Mike, thanks for your comments on Guadalcanal and the sacrifices that were made. I agree that Neptune's Inferno is a very thorough book and a well written account. Regards
