Vicoustic and gik

Hi all

Does anyone have any direct experience with both gik and vicoustic? I am considering treatment for my room. My dealer only has vicoustic but that is quite more expensive.

In terms of sound quality, is there a big difference between the two?

Clearly I think the vicoustic looks better for sure.

I've switched from GIK to Vicoustic.

The GIK stuff was 4 soffit basstraps, some 244 basstraps and 242 panels.
The Vicoustic I have now is 6 wave wood and 12 of their corner basstraps.

I did some measuring in my room, and the soffit basstraps measured better than the Vicoustic basstraps but they are much larger, so I think in surface area its around the same.

The GIK panels made my room a bit too dead.
They dont blend too well in a modern living space, although having art on some of the panels and traps would help a lot.
You can get Art on most of their basstraps as well.

The Vicoustic panels are very nice to look at and perform well.
The wave wood panels is a pain to mount, as they must be glued on.
They are very fragile as well.
I glued them on some wood panels which is mounted on the wall, so I can remove them later when needed.

All in all im happy I made the switch, and my wife as well.
Most guests that enter our living room has commented positively as well, if that matters to you.

I have products from both firms. I would say that the main difference is their approach to the products. GIK makes a fine product that is rather basic. They have begun to get more into products with a mix of diffusion and absorption (e.g., their Alpha panels), but it's certainly possible to buy only plain-absorption panels from them and deaden the room a little too much -- though what is "too much" is entirely a matter a taste. It appears to me that GIK products are designed to be functional at low cost. They are hardly striking visually, but you can spruce them up quite a bit by choosing a nonstandard Guilford fabric that goes with your decor.

Many of the Vicoustic products, especially the wood ones, are designed with artistic appeal. Some are strikingly beautiful. If I had unlimited funds, I'd probably fit out my room with mainly Vicoustic products. But I don't, so it's mostly GIK products, ASC products from my previous room, and a few Vicoustic skyline-type diffusers. The acoustic result is not hindered by using lower-cost treatments.

As to photos, those who are interested can look at Web pages for Vicoustic and GIK. Here's my room, with soffit traps by GIK, panels and half-rounds by ASC, and inexpensive diffusers by Vicoustic (though mounted by me):

Thanks! I moved the subs around to find the best spot, and tried 5 different positions (front corners, front near center of short wall, just near and inside mains, sidewall slightly closer to listener than mains, and current). This was the best of those.
