Love my cd's but have a lot of vinyl
I 've been a happy cd convert since 1987. Problem is I have about 600lps sitting around taking up space. I've been toying with the idea of getting back into vinyl and have been looking into a new table/ cartridge. However since I'm not a 100% committed I will wait on a new table. I have a Yamaha YPD8 , was a great table back in the day,has adjustable VTA https://www.vinylengine.com/library/yamaha/yp-d8.shtml
It has a v15type 5 that needs replacing. Using Ortofons cartridge selector any of the 2m series's will work. Or should I buy a newer second hand table or a budget table like proJect or rega ?

how are the condition of your Lp's ? If good or better than 600 is a fair amount to warrant investment in playback, especially if you envision more in the future.
Is you Yammie TT in good repair ? if so, my suggestion would be to get yourself a respectable cart like you mentioned and give it a 'spin'. If you become re-connected to vinyl then you can contemplate a upgrade path from there should you so desire. |

Tim.......The Yamaha YPD8 direct drive turntable is a decent rig with a nice tonearm. Install an Ortofon 2M Black moving magnet cartridge and you will be impressed with the performance.

Chances are the new "budget" table will not bring you an improvement in sound quality. Get your TT all sorted out and enjoy.

As Dave mentioned, cleanliness is next to godliness with LPs. Some excellent RCMs out there these days.

Im liking vinyl
[IMG][IMG][/IMG][/IMG]The difference between the V15mr and the 2m black is like night and day. This vinyl thing could get addictive.

Very nice. Am also a fan of the 2M Black and the Ortofon 'house sound', in general.
Too bad DD TTs w/semi-automatic arms have gone away. Yamaha, Denon & Sony all made some great ones.

2M Black is a great choice! I've used it on two different tables with great success. Enjoy!

I was in the same situation as you and debated for a long time whether to invest in a vinyl playback system. When I finally pulled the trigger around 10 years ago my digital listening took a major backseat.
I put a budget cap (I know impossible for audiophiles!) and just went for it with a new table, tonearm, cartridge, phono preamp and RCM. My guess is if you get a RCM you will find as I did almost all your LP's will be great after a good cleaning. Good luck with what ever you decide....
