OK, so it's definitely not a straight forward or run of the mill problem.

However, I'm still inclined to believe that the amplifier doesn't like the load and is self-oscillating. If you owned an oscilloscope it would be easy to see such a problem of course.

The only other thing that I can think of is that one of those speaker cables is routed differently. Perhaps the offending cable is routed in close proximity to another cable or cables that might be radiating some EMI?

What's confusing also is that Moon amps are not known to be load sensitive, as the low feedback design makes them largely immune.

Which is all why this is so strange, especially the fact that my other amps have no issue with the speakers or cables. The speaker cables are in a different configuration on that side (more of an "S" shape, the other channel is a straight line as the amp for both channels is positioned very near to the right channel, the one that induces the issue) so it could be that the amp is sensitive to RF/EMI or other energy at certain frequencies.

Just as an update - the dealer got in a Moon 700i, which uses pretty much the same amplification stage, and loaned it to me to audition.

I had no issues with it whatsoever, so it's pointing pretty solidly towards that particular sample of the 870A; they've never received a new demo 870A for me to try.
