Couldn't agree more. I used to get marketing materials offering me a couple of nights "free" at resorts if I would attend their timeshare presentation. Right before Thanksgiving I got a post card offering me 2 tickets to see A Beautiful Day In The Neighborhood (matinee no less!) if I would attend a session on pre-planned funerals. While our age group may have disposable income, most of the marketing decisions are made for much younger audiences.

How Many Miles Will Today’s Electric Vehicles Take You?
Perhaps you’ve been considering buying an electric car, but you’re concerned about range? Early on, range anxiety was one of the most significant roadblocks to EV adoption. Sadly, many of those limited-range electric cars still exist. However, some automakers have updated their electric vehicles to add more range or brought new longer range EVs to the market.

Many of today’s newest electric cars and SUVs offer over 200 miles of range. In fact, an EV range near 250 miles seems to be the new normal. Multiple electric vehicles, including the Chevrolet Bolt, Kia Niro EV, and the Hyundai Kona Electric all fit that mold. Tesla’s vehicle lineup offers even more range, with its flagship Model S leading the pack with a whopping 370 miles on tap.

gotcha Ron, per your post, "a range 'near' 250 miles seems to be the new norm". As for the 370 miles, I wouldn't count on it in the mountains with winter driving ! perhaps driving through the corn fields of Kansas in the fall !

I have no doubt the technology will improve far greater in the next decade and perhaps before my driving days are over I'll own one, we shall see ..........

On another note, a buddy of mine who owns an auto body shop is working on their second Tesla, avg wait time for parts, over 30 days.

It’s all about the mission. We just completed a 2400 mile road trip spread over four travel days. In the process we burned 109 gallons of gas and stopped for fuel 6 times for about 10 minutes each time.

That kind of trip would be very challenging in an EV with a 250 mile range and 200 mile average between stops. 12 stops of 60 minutes each (best case with a Tesla Supercharger) would add another two days to the trip.

All of this will get way better as battery technology improves.

A suburban/urban commute is totally doable today. About 18% of US electricity is from renewables and that is increasing annually.

I’m 64 and will own an EV before I croak. I can always rent a a gas car for long trips.

But sooner than that I’ll turn our boat into an electric one and all the small gas engines into electrics. Dealing with intermittently used small gas engines is a big pain in my ass right now. I will spend money to make it go away.

My biggest issue with EV right now is the cost and the quality of what you get ... I've driven German sports cars for a long time now and when I sit in a Tesla ... let's just say the quality of the interior isn't what I'm used to for sure. The interior parts seem really flimsy ... not solid in other words. Also, whatever money you save on gas will never be re-couped by the EV with today's pricing. Of course, build quality will improve, cost will come down over time and we'll all get more interested in EV's as these things occur. Just isn't there yet for me.

Then there is the issue of recycling these batteries when they become really large mass scale ... not sure how environmentally friendly these batteries will be either or how much lithium is really available in the long term if there are 100's of Millions of EV's at some future point ... Just a question

George

The main reason for me going the EV route was because of the low cost. I lease my vehicles — I like a new vehicle every 3 years and I like never paying for service.

With a Federal Tax Credit of $7500 and no EV Sales Tax in NJ, it was a no-brainer. My $55,000 EV cost me only $281/month and I've never been to a gas station.

They are working on putting graphene in with the lithium to greatly extend the battery life and cut the charging time to ten mins.

It was definitely a staged video. I also realized in that video how large the Tesla ugly truck actually is in comparison to a gas powered truck! When I can get around 300-350 miles on an electric vehicle, I'll probably get more interested. Long trips and finding a charging station are my issues for now. I will let the others be the beta testers.
