There is no such thing as Platinum finish. There was a series of limited edition Strads, Amati Anniversarios, and Guarneri Mementos dubbed Palladio. Palladio was available world wide, including through Sumiko in the US.

FWIW I have yet to see a pair of SEs that are marked SE on the box. There are ways to tell but that is not one

A charge against lack of sleep this end Bill. Need to hit the beach and have a clearer mind. I knew I couldn't spell it (Palladio). Not to argue w/you about USA distro -- but, I have an email from Sumiko somewhere that advises that finish was not available in the USA. Things change in this busines & may be one of those instances.

Corrected my response in Cyrils post.

William13 can always call his dealer and ask about the outside stenciling/labeling -- the boxes are there.

Best

Bob

Bob,

Easiest way to check is to call Sumiko. We have records by serial number.

I walked our warehouse last week. As I said above the boxes do not say SE on them, at least no so far.

If there is a dealer representing Original Elipsas as SEs I'd like to know who it is. That is unacceptable.

FWIW, your dealer was one of the first to embrace SE and he's one if its most ardent supporters. : yes:

So if an Elipsa has "Red Violin Finish" then it is definitely an SE?

"FWIW I have yet to see a pair of SEs that are marked SE on the box. There are ways to tell but that is not one"

Bill

So what are other ways to tell without dismantling or hearing?

No there is no dealer misrepresenting anything. I just want to know how to visually recognize an SE vs non SE.

Yes. Red Violin is SE

The finish is different.

But if there is a doubt, get the serial number and give Sumiko a call. If the seller won't give you the serial number, run away - Fast.

Palladio -- only one Strad pair of 25 worldwide known to exist in the USA is what I now recall from a post a year or more ago.

True. I think there are now 3 or 4 others that have migrated here.

The SF Elipsa on the left in the traditional soft matt finish which is not the gloss lacquer finish of the Homage line. The SF Elipsa SE on the right is in the exceptionally rich and deep gloss hand-rubbed lacquer in the traditional Red Violin finish of the Homage series.
