You hit the nail on the head - I was referring to The Teaching Company's "How to Listen to and Understand Great Music" course, which I had downloaded to the iPod. It covers Western music from ancient Greece through the early 20th century in 48 45-minute lectures. I also bought the same professor's course (Michael Greenberg) on Beethoven's symphonies, but haven't finished that yet. I've bought several other courses over the years from them, and when these courses are on sale, they're a great deal for really understanding a subject you maybe missed in school or about which you've become curious. I recently bought a course from them on the Byzantine Empire that my boy & I are listening to as we prepare for a vacation to Turkey. He's been good with it, especially when he gets to stay up a little later because we're listening to it (surprise!). Thanks for the tip about the fundamentals course. Paul

I think I'm going to have to join you, Paul and Cyril, in learning more about the music that I love so well. I've read a lot and listened for most of my adult life - but I've never taken even a very remedial course. The Teaching Company's lecture series sounds very interesting.

Back to the music . . . . I am listening to an SACD recording on PentaTone of Handel's Organ Concertos Numbers 1,2,3, and 4 byDaniel Chorzempa with the Concerto Amsterdam conducted by Jaap Schröder.
I have found the PentaTone SACD's to be extremely good and this disc is one of the best.

I got up early this morning, got coffee, the newspapers, my laptop, and went to my upstairs "listening" room to enjoy an hour or so of quiet reflection, before the rest of the household began stirring.
Naturally, I pulled out the couple of discs I wanted to play, to add to the mood of the morning. The first, a very gentle classical cd by Anne-Sophie Mutter - Meditations, and the next, a little more lively SACD of Mozart's Concertone for Two Violins and Orchestra by Julia Fischer and Gordon Nikolic with the Netherlands Chamber Orchestra. What a Blissful experience. Quiet listening, getting the news of the day, perfect enjoyment. My question is: What the heck do all the Rock Heads listen to when they want to relax and enjoy the perfect beauty of God's Creation? RAP? ROLLING STONES? GRATEFUL DEAD? 10000 MANIACS? I really cannot imagine a peaceful life without the absolute beauty of Classical Music!!!!!
