Default A realistic surround speakers to use with Q7 and SCC

I Know if i say it out, I will get a boo from Magico fans here.
Back in 1998 I used Definitive Technology BP2000 CLR3000 and BPX for 5.1
Now Q7 and SCC replaced BP2000 and CLR3000.
The large BP2000 served as surrounds since 2007, BPX became surr back channels for 7.1

I noticed long ago that all dust caps were rotten and broken, in some they were entirely gone.
So, soon I will have to replace the surrounds and surround back speakers. Ok actually the replacement drivers
Cost $40 each, I will need 16 of them. So I better replace the speakers rather than to repair them.

Speaker cables to rear channels are small 1sqmm Transparent in wall, 15 meters long. So current delivery will be poor,
That will not suit for some hunger like S5 or S3. Yes i like to play " full range" all around. So I think to have rear speakers
With built-in subwoofer, just like the BP2000 is still a good idea.

So I have my eyes on Golden Ear Triton Two.. Or Definitive 8060. These are more affordable too.
Any one here use to hear them?

Toga

from my experience, it is difficult to mix different brands in a HT system. The sound loses coherency. I personally use a pair of S1, because the wall mounted S1.5 were not launched yet when I built my system.

Jazzman, as I use different amplifier and cables for rear anyway, I don't expect to make a 100% matched even though I use something like S3. I prefer rear to have full range bass too.

Toga, I've enjoyed reading your posts. This one makes me laugh. You may end up with a pair of speakers that cost less than a cable or two that you're using! Somehow, as good as the Golden Ears are, I don't think you'll compromise. Somehow, I see a pair of Q1s in your future...

I agree, given the level of Toga's Q7's, i'd invest in a pair of Q1's as rear channels. If you later decide to go to full 7.1, you could then use the Q1's as side channels. Mwah 2c

Hey In case fans not approve for Golden Ears, why the Q1? I think S3 will handle power much better, I know Q1's limit very well. And my Q3 bottomed out many times during movies. Q1 won't survive the hollywood movies. Hey guys sometimes i just wanna save $$$. And I am a true 2-ch guy. Movies are not primary. Toga

I have heard the Definitive Technology BP7000SC used in HT 5.2 theater and it was VERY good. The system had them for front and rear pairs but I don't remember what the center channel was. I would check out the larger present models like the newer Mythos ST1

You made a good points Toga. Conceptually it makes sense matching Q series fronts with Q series rear channels. Based on your power handling requirements, I suppose the ultimate rears would be Q3's But if you want bigger power handling & want to contain cost, the S3's should work perfectly. They will match the tonality of your Q7's, and especially SCC so they should do the job!

Surround channels are quite different than front or center, they require much less power...
I use S1 as surround, with signal above 50Hz going to my 2 subs. The S1 have no problem at all to cope with the volume of action movies, and I listen quite loud. Personally I would go for a S1 or S1.5 if you want it wall mounted. I think that a S3 or a Q1 would be an overkill.
Since you have already the 3 front channels as Magico, I think that saving on the surround and going for another brand with different voicing is a waste. I would rather save a few k on your next cable or power cable.
