AKG K1000 worth getting?

Mike.......If she comes with the AKG K1000's, I'll order a pair this evening.

Mike.......I'm not so sure I could tolerate the pads pressing my temples above my ears. The K1000 transducter don't actually cover your ears, they hang over them.

I tried them on and found it to be not too bad. I liked the sound, but there is very little bass.

I have one. It sounds wonderful, but it's not delicious sounding - very HiFi, detailed, etc.

Anyone serious about headphones and amps (enough to collect them) MUST HAVE ONE - it's a classic.

I prefer my Senn HD580, but I ain't selling the AKG K1000.

What would you say a mint with box is worth? Seems like there are different versions. Heavy bass and light bass. I don't get it.

A mint would probably go for $1K to $1500.

As far as bass goes, a lot depends on the amp driving them - they like A LOT of power. Forget most headphone amps, they need a "proper" amp. I tried mine with the 501s and they had a good amount of bass - but still sounded a bit too analytical.

Apparently they sound great with 300B tubes, but I don't have first hand experience.

Yes, you can - and should - connect them directly to the speaker tap. You can try both the 4 and 8 Ohm and see which one sounds best to you - the K1000's nominal impedance is about 100 Ohms if I recall, so the power delivered to the headphones will be a fraction of your amp's rated power.

I don't see AKG K1000s going down in value - as long as you keep it in good conditions. Buying a used one is not very risky since you can easily resell it for close to what you paid for.

Alberto.......I have to wonder about the common negative (-) lead on a headphone jack. This would require the two mono amps to have their negative (-) output terminals tied together at the headphone female connector, along with the hot (+) positive outputs from each amplifier. Is this how you connected your K1000 to the MC501's? I would have to inquire from the manufacturer before I strapped the negative (-) terminals together from a pair of triode amps without protection circuits in the output stage like the MC501's use.
