Default 1 Degree Change in Tempreature (cold) = 2% Increase in Risk?

Just to share - and this is in the medical reports:

A ONE degree change (colder/lower) in temperature would result in a TWO percent risk of having a stroke/heart attack.

Live Example: Someone like me come from the tropics, use to year round 28C to 30C temperature suddenly went over to Shanghai in end Dec where its winter season and daily about 0C to 2C. Well, my risk/chance to having a stroke/heart attack would be like 52% - 56%.

Reason:? As the weather gets colder, the blood vessels contracts - as result the flow of blood is now impeded as the circumference of the blood vessel/artery gets smaller. In turn, to keep warm, the blood gets thicker. Now, if one had some deposits known as cholesterol in the arteries, one can imagine the situation.

This real life situation happen to my colleague's wife, who is perfectly normal, had some cholesterol problem but NEVER heart problem, died upon arriving in Shanghai 2 days later.

I had some scary "cramps/tightening" in the chest for the few days I was there the same week (Christmas). Back home, went for test and everything's "normal". The above was told to me by my Cardio and told me to be careful the next time. More warm clothes to keep warm, more warm drinks .... to avoid such 'sudden' issues which may not be good.

Just to share the experience and hopefully, a caution to take when travel between extreme temperatures where one is not used to.

Cheers!

Good thing you got rid of your tube system, Jerry! That probably heated up your room a few degrees at least!

Jerry, so visiting Alaska and Siberia would put you well over 100% risk with their -30 deg temps... I guess one can consider himself dead on arrival in those places.

Yup! But then, what is there to see in Siberia and Alaska to warrant such risks to visit?

Jerry.......I am glad to hear you are home in good health. The chest pains in Shanghai were a wake up call. Next time dress warmer in layers, and spend less time outside. Here's wishing you a long and healthy life.

Hey Jerry, I was kidding around. I hope I didn't come across as insensitive to your experience in Shanghai. Believe me, I have plenty of cholesterol in my veins and I go outside to smoke in my t-shirt when it is in the teens outside. I guess one of these days my wife may find me dead out there...

Hi Serge,

No problem. I can take jokes. BUT seriously, this lady dont seem to "emit heat" Still, when you dont have Sasha's/Sophia's, well a small little speaker like an LS3/5a will still make music I guess.

Cheers!
