Your new MX-R amplifiers are beautiful.
Dan, dont replace the McIntosh! Add the Ayre combo .... to your collection!

I know pretty well the matching Ayre KX-R. I would love to own one by myself. I truly believe this preamp is in the top 5 in the current audio world production

These are great amps. I went from Mac 501s to MXRs to Bryston 28 SST2s, back to MXRs. I debated buying the KXR for a year, which was a year wasted, I was always till then of the DAC direct drive (Wadia 27ix) school or a pre (Mac C220/Mac C46/) gives you a little headroom (but nothing more). The KXR throws a wide, deep and high soundstage that holistically takes the MXRs to another level.

Congrats on the MXR's, I've now owned mine for a few years. This is after running tube amps for 2 decades. I've never had a complaint about them...they just play...they just sound good...they never run out of power....they just keep on being effortless.

I to run a tube pre amp with them (Nagra PLL)...I briefly auditioned a KXR a while back...it was quieter, more resolution...but missed a touch on the weight on each note. It was a hard choice honestly and frankly just came down to money...

Power cords and proper support are crucial on the MXR's. They quickly respond...I'm using Shunyata Anaconda Zitrons and have the amps on a Grand Prix Audio Silverstone Rack.

Are they new or used? If new...breaking is very long...like a few months...just keep em playing. Also, I rarely put mine in standby...just fully powered up...seem so sound a touch better this way

Jerry.......I hear you. I know I would miss the Mac gear. The thing is I have no more room for another system, and I do have two full blown McIntosh systems. One could go to make room for an Ayre system and I would still have the other.

The main thing is I am very happy with the sound systems I have. Other than lusting for Ayre components, there is no reason to make any changes. Both systems are sounding fabulous.

Congrats on new amps...I have the MX-R/KX-R combo in black with Sashas. Incredible. I do sometimes swap the amps for the Ref 250s...listening to that combo now. I think I prefer the 250s presentation but I find that I listen more to the MX-Rs as the SS amps don't give up that much to the tubes...and I don't feel guilty when getting in just a short 45-60 minute listening session. I always feel like I need a few hours to make turning on the tube amps worth it.

As a civilian, I hate -- IMO, they are there to be broken.

Congrats on the MXR's and the C4's too. I'd venture to say the C500 will be close to eviction. It works well, extremely well with McIntosh but IMO for the MXR's a matching preamp would probably be the ultimate choice if one was looking towards the future.

Best

Bob
