Default TuneTot questions…

Most of the reviews for the TuneTot seem to be good with the exception of the review from Audio Science Review. Also from what I read, never seen so many negative comments on a forum for this bookshelf speaker ( Audio Science Review forum )

Before going to Toronto to hear them, I have some questions…

Would my McIntosh MC462 work well with Wilson Audio products in general?

How do they compare to other book shelf speakers such as B&W 705 signature ?

These would be used as main speakers + JL Audio subwoofer ( replacing Magnepan’s )

Dan

From trusted friends that have heard them, they are amazing stand-mounts.

Darko has an informative review on them.

As for ASR, who cares what they say? They'd have folks believe that the "measurements*" they do are all that matters. It's bullsh*t. They are as bad as Julian Hirsch of Hirsch-Houck Labs was back in the day.

As Nelson Pass has stated: "The ear is not a microphone and the brain is not a tape recorder." And Nelson knows a thing or two about this.

*–Oh, and with respect to their "measurements" have you ever seen them publish a statistically valid MSA? Nope. They wouldn't know an MSA if it smacked them in the face. As someone who spent their entire career working as a scientist, in my professional opinion, Audio "Science" Review is as bad for science as Lamarck.

Also from thread: TuneTots in a main system? After posting my question.

I have heard the 805D3 often in the past so what PeterMusic has stated with his experience with the TuneTots is helpful.

Why not? Add a Loke sub and you're good to go...

And, respectfully, it doesn't matter what others think about them, it only matters that you think about them.

Why the B&W 705 (made in China) rather than 805 (made in England)? Would not the TuneTot be more in line with the 805?

Some stunningly good stand-mounted speakers out there in the Tune Tot price range. Joseph Audio Pulsar, Triangle Magellan Duetto & Paradigm Persona (made in Canada) to name just three.

Can't think of a pair of speakers the MC462 would not do well with as long as you are judicious with the volume knob. Smaller speakers simply cannot go as loud as large speakers, regardless of the power driving them.

+1 on PumaCat's comments on the pseudo-Science Forum.

Every time I read an ASR thread I am reminded of Spock telling Kirk that instruments are only designed to measure what we know to measure, they cannot measure what we do not know to measure, and the universe is filled with unknowns. Best to audition for yourself, I like the Tune Tots but there are clearly other very worthy choices as mentioned.

Stephen, I basically agree with you. However, I have always desired gear that I own to sound good and measure good as well. The two are not mutually exclusive, you know. I don't know about Tune Tots but Wilson's invariably measure extremely well and have excellent sonics. For example, a tube amp that purports to produce 450 watts/ch but will in fact only produce 180 watts when measured does not serve the high end community well. Obviously, if the lab is incompetent with their measurements, their measurements mean nothing. I suspect that Wilson very carefully measures all their speakers. In addition, have you seen Nelson Pass's personal system? It's on youtube

Best

Charles

Always enjoy seeing Nelson's listening space. Makes me feel mine is well organized.
Also like that he only has two current pieces of Pass Labs gear.......... XP-17 phono-preamp and INT-25 integrated amp.

In this case Amir (Audio Science Review) overruled his own measurements and had very positive things to say about the actual listening. I would not pay much attention to the ASR forum - a lot of disgruntled axe-to-grind folks. (y'all read the review before commenting, right? ).

"If I were to just go by the measurements, the Tunetot would not get good marks. But I have promised you all that I won't lie about what I hear no matter how much of a conflict this provides. To that end, I am going to recommend the Wilson TuneTot ...." .

Yes, Amir still recommended the TuneTot, it was first time I came across ASR, but did not expect so many disgruntled folks.
