Does any media match Tape?

I have no idea why.

And I thought I was the young one in this crowd!

Growing up, my father had a Pioneer RT707. He made a bunch of tapes on that deck, including recordings of me as a baby and of our 19 rank pipe organ we once had (built from scratch by us).

A few years back, I bought a mint Teac A-3300SX so that I could not only play those old tapes of dad's, but also transfer them to digital to preserve them. The Teac was supposed to have been gone through and calibrated by a retired Teac/Tascam tech before it was sold to me. The thing sounded like pooh. After close inspection, I found a few questionable capacitors that I replaced which helped, but the audio was still off center, one channel muddy, the other tinny. I downloaded the tech manuals, studied them, pulled out my test equipment and had a go at aligning the heads and calibrating it myself. In the end, it sounded excellent and I was able to get all of those old tapes transferred.

Maybe one day I'll get another. I'd love to have a Technics RS-777 deck, a Pioneer RT-909 and an Akai GX-747.

I've read that tape doesn't have to be processed like Vinyl - some examples that I have read are track dynamic range and setting a low frequency filter to create a mono low frequency signal- based on the LP's limitations. Is this true?
