Jérôme.......I don't necessarily agree with this statement about the passion of buying gear being sad. In fact, if a person can afford to play, rotating gear in and out of one's system can be a great passion. Who said it must be just about the music. In my opinion, if it were just about the music, then reproduced music would be totally unacceptable because it is such a far cry from the real energy, emotion, and sonic integrety of original performances. Our hobby is about both the music and the gear. Just think about the gear that has passed through your home in the past three years. Great fun.

I'm for the gear along with the music. It's a chicken egg thing. No regrets with any of my purchases. Still in aquisition mode. Been trying out a few cables of late.

I've also been buying music in bulk lately, catching up on those must have LP subscriptions & have doubled up on a couple of purchases. Oops, Oh well...under the Xmas tree they go.

ooooowe....Both UPS & FEDEX at the door....Hmmmm, something from MasterLu...gotta go

Well said, sir!

Here is what I think to be true:

The passion for music will drive the sales for gear. This forum talks mostly about the gear. Thus we
buy more gear because we saturate our minds with it. (I've already spent more on Hifi, here, since
I've become a member of AA than I've have in my entire LIFE!
)

Everyone wants "The Best." As technology advances and we continue to refine existing technologies,
it only gets better.

High Fidelity, Audio and Music are full of passion, enjoyment and love. It's an industry where there is so
much culture and so much potential to profit from our emotions.

Music is and "endless goldmine" industry. It's awful that audio gear, audio gear retailers, and the priority
for fidelity is losing the battle of convenience. There still is a great potential for the better recording sales
(master re-issues) and better gear sales.

I believe that this forum is a part of a new breed of "grass roots" efforts to re-invigorate a growth industry.
The model is simple. Create a forum, get advertisers, get people to subscribe, provide benefits to subscribers,
and cultivate a positive environment. (Ever notice when someone new joins, how many "Welcome!" posts they get?)

What will lead the way is a trustworthy and credible buyer's market in the used or new sales that are posted
in the subscriber only section. Validate sellers and buyer, just like all the other major online traders/auctioneers.
Police the ignorant or misinformed members so that you create a "positive narrative" when some one talks about
this forum anywhere else.

Here is it folks, this is your new brick n' mortar store. Cept this time we can all talk
about everything, bringing us together in search for that "Audio Nirvana"

Okay coffee break over, back to the Salt mines!

Interesting thread David.

I like change every once in a while. Sometimes I have a desire to make a change for changes sake. I want to hear the music delivered a bit differently even if it may not be better.

Interesting perspective Bill.. but who defines what is best and who decides that that is right? Since musical enjoyment is a subjective decision then what is best.. will vary as much as there are people interested in music.

I do agree that in a general sense there is a desire to move towards improvement. To get something 'better' than you have now, but there is that theory of diminishing returns.

I mean is 'digital' the best? or is 'analog' the best? Is playing vinyl better then streaming music? Is the Burmester Music Server 'better' then Sooloos? Personally, I'm very happy with Sonos...

There is nothing wrong with being passionate about High Fidelity. If you have the means then GO for it. I love hearing systems that are superlative, but that doesn't meant I would want to own one.

If I had a choice between having no music and listening to music a hand held transistor radio, I can tell you, I would opt for the radio.

Would I prefer listening to Melody Gardot in person or on Ivan's system? I'd prefer to hear her live. Yet, chances are she would sound better on Ivan's system or a couple of dozen systems I've seen here.. and I think she sounds damn good on mine...

Just.. saying..

Agreed.

That being said, I was in a similar position some years ago, trading gear, looking for the undefined and totally unattainable "best." Then came a point when I sold all the equipment and played music on my desktop and in the car(s). It was kinda nice; never worried about the sonic attributes and simply enjoyed the music. My current system is very modest, but it's loads of fun to listen to. I spend all my spare cash on records, not gear. Perhaps the OP reached a similar state of being.
