Very cool. I've been thinking about getting a R2R.

Talking Studer A810 MkII is in the House!!

Well I picked up the Studer A810 MkII yesterday, un-crated & racked today.

Unit is #7979, one of the last 10 made. It originated from a retired CBS exec & has low Canadian hours. It has undergone a Studer restoration. The previous owner assures me a good 10yrs trouble free....Fingers crossed, but of course there's no getting away from the fact that this sophisticated piece of Swiss engineering is a relic.

I have switched the power selection to 240v but have yet to run power through it. I will do that this evening. If all is good, it will get its 1st play by the weekend. More expensive interconnects required...

Visually & cosmetically, I rate the unit conservatively 9/10, but out of the crate, I am comfortable to give it a 9.5/10. What a great survivor, truly a museum piece. The unit looks brand new!
I have the option to purchase a brand new 4 speed upgrade kit which will push it up to 30ips.

Steve,
I am infinitely jealous. Early in my career, I worked for Harris Broadcast and tested all the equipment we used in our turnkey studio programs. I tested a slew of 2-track studio machines: Revox B77, Otari MX 5050B, Technics RS 1500, Studer A810, and Scully 280B were the ones I remember.

The Studer A810 had, by far, the very best tape handling and technical performance of the pack. It was a standout. It was ruler flat from 20Hz to 20KHz with the lowest noise of any of the decks tested. I sounded great, too!

You have a truly awesome machine. Congratulations!

Nice R2R! I work at a recording studio and we have a Studer 2" A827 with 16 and 24 tracks heads... The transport is a dream. For mix down we have an ATR 102 1/2" two track - IMO one of the best two track ever made. A bit bulky for home use though...

Anyhow, I just thought I'd mention 'cause I didn't see anyone mention it but the heads need to be de-magnetized regularly or they will start getting noisy. A handy mag is only $80 but make sure you know exactly what your doing or you can permanently magnetize the heads

Anyhow, enjoy your purchase - your one of lucky few who get to hear what it "really sounded like" before the digital converter or vinyl pressing downgrades.

Kats....Welcome to AA!

thanks for the tip.. I'm a R2R newby & any help is most welcomed. If you have any direction with where to buy a de-mag & tape media would be appreciated.

The stereo/mono button is programmed for Type A (3M 996 tape) & Type B (SM 911). I would like to find a good reputable source for NIB medium.

I haven't played it yet as I've been waiting for some longer XLRs. Any day now!

Finally, received longer XLRs today & a new PC. Despite cable some burn in required, OMG!

The supplied demo tape is a tape to tape compilation. It sounds amazing.

You may argue with me until you are blue in the face....but digital is not there. We have lost something along the way... I hope that lost analogue element is found & translated before it is too late.

The rounded full body of the Studer sounds, so natural, so real.

Time to visit The Tape Project...

But first, must install the NOS Studer 820 tranfoless cards which are ready to go in.

The Studer A810 MkII marries beautifully with the C1000T & MC2301s. The synergy is all there. Smooth, detailed, humongous soundstage. Deep bass notes.

The Lady says the bass is shaking the lead light windows at the front of the house.
