Just read through the steps first and then proceed. Once the cover is off read through the remaining steps and just eyeball each step without actually preforming the step. Do this as many times as you need until you are comfortable. Once you are comfortable then preform the procedure.

Once the cover is off and you are comfortable the procedure takes only a couple of minutes.

Hey Paul,

Thank you for everything. I don't think I am going to attempt another update, my PC (Win10) seemed to have a problem connecting to the D1100 (it shut down the mouse and keyboard every time the USB cable was connected). I'll contact Mac in the morning and see what they have to say. If no help from them, I'll try a service center.

I just spoke to Mac, nothing I can do but to bring it in. They suggested that I will try to connect it to my PC as if it was on Update Mode and try to continue the process, but it does not work. The second I connect the D1100 to my PC, my mouse and keyboard stop working and I can't access anything. It's going to be a long day...

Is your keyboard and mouse a USB dongle?
If so, sometimes there is a strange conflict even if its a MS product.
Try another mouse, keyboard if you can.
