Schiit Yggdrasil DAC piques my attention

If the black Yggdrasil is anodized, I'm good. If the black finish is paint, I may have to reconsider the silver finish.

Dan, one idea might be to order a silver finish, remove the cover and send it out to a local anodizing house to anodize in black. Once you get it back in black, perhaps the metal shop for Schiit would silk-screen the lettering for you if you provide them with a black chassis. Otherwise, you may be waiting a number of months for a unit in black to become available.

Stephen.......If the cover on the Yggdrasil is removed, I can kiss the 5 year warranty goodbye. That seems like a lot to go through for a black finish.

Dan, you might want to check with Schiit specifically whether regarding removing the cover would void the warranty because many of their DACs are end-user or local electronics technician upgradable. Many of the guys at SBAF were doing their own Gen 5 USB board upgrades, and I don't think doing this voids the warranty, just as upgrading RAM in a Mac does not void the warranty.

From Schit's web page on the Gen 5 USB upgrade:
"If you’re an experienced electronics technician or engineer who is familiar with ESD precautions, or work with a good tech, you can choose to have the Gen 5 board sent to you directly, fully tested and protected in an antistatic bag. Please note that by selecting this option, you are saying, "Yes, I am, or know, a competent electronics technician who does not need hand-holding for this installation, and I will not allow an inexperienced person to perform the upgrade, since I understand there are no user-serviceable parts inside."

This implies that removing the cover will not void the warranty. For example, removing the cover on my C-J PV-12 preamp to install tubes did not void the warranty. But it might be construed that anodizing a silver chassis black would void the warranty, but I don't see how as Schiit does this themselves from time to time. Best to check with them, though. They are reasonable people.

Just heard back from Schiit Audio about the black finish on the Yggdrasil.
