Ear Protection?
I would assume that audiophile shooters would be fanatics about ear protection. What are you guys using?

Randy.......I use two levels of hearing protection. First, I insert the expanding foam ear plugs then I wear the Howard Leight Impact Sport electronic earmuff. The combination provides ample sound protection with handgun and AR-15 rifle percussion.

Electronic muffs are great. They allow you to hear what's going on. I also have a pair of these: It's like a low quality custom hearing aid (audio could be better) with very good protection. |

I double as well when shooting.
Also use the Etymotic plugs for live shows and long flights. They do "sound" much better at live concerts than other products. And I'd argue that you can often hear better with them in at some shows. My hearing it too precious to burn. |

foam plugs (NRR 32)
I am looking into the electronic (insertable) ear plugs, they allow one to actually hear the trap release when shooting clays. |

http://www.amazon.com/Surefire-Defen...ing+protection For BPCR & high power competition I have a set of custom fitted silicone rubber 'plugs' that are similar to the foam plugs, but heavy/dense and sort of 'screw' into the ear canal that are both quite comfortable and very effective. If I shot in competitions that allowed muzzle-brakes I would add a pair of the electronic muffs on top.

I like the idea of the electronic ear muffs, but question if they react fast enough to the loud sounds to adequately protect your hearing.
Normally use passive double protection (plugs and muffs). |

ths61.......I use the Howard Leight Impact Sport electronic earmuffs at the range. The microphones and auto-gain control amplifier works well. Any impact noise immediately silences the mic's, then they gradually return so that you can hear people speaking to you and other sounds. Gun fire immediately mutes the electronics. There is a volume control on the Howard Leight Impact Sport electronic earmuffs. I turn my microphone volume up high enough to hear range commands and conversation through my foam ear plugs but the mic's mute instantly with percussions. I like mine. They work great and fold up for storage in my range bag.
