Default "Ogdens' Nut Gone Flake" vs. "Sgt Pepper"

I wish I could find, or better remember, the article that mentioned that in 1968 the Small Faces' "Ogdens' Nut Gone Flake" won some industry or critics award over the Beatles "Sgt Pepper's". For whatever such awards are worth.

Nevertheless, that article prompted me to seriously explore The Small Faces, and especially the weirdly named "Ogdens' Nut Gone Flake". I am afraid that I missed them almost completely in my native Italy in the 60s (when I wasn't even a teenager.) And, unlike the Beatles, they were rarely mentioned in the 70s - at least where I lived. So I missed the boat at the time, but I am really glad I decided to go back and give them a listen.

I have no idea how this can be generalized, but I've listened to said Small Faces' album several times in the last few months (at least once or twice a week) and I have yet to get tired of it. I actually feel "the need" to listen to it. I can't say the same about "Sgt. Pepper" - I appreciate its genius, but it's not something I reach, or reached, for very often.

I am not saying this to upset Beatles fans, but to encourage those who haven't given the Small Faces (and especially "Ogdens' Nut Gone Flake" ) a listen (either ever, or recently) to do so. It really is an amazing record and one that NEVER fails to put me in a jolly good mood.

Now, if I could only get the beginning of "Lazy Sunday Afternoon" out of my head .

It's an excellent album and first stumbled upon it in the mid-70's. I've listened to it often over the years and it still brings a smile to my face, but so does Sgt Peppers.

Ogdens or Pepper's? Yes.
