I’m trying to avoid the urge to get new tubes...I keep hearing about all these different ones that sound better and I just can’t imagine trying to figure out if it’s true or even how

DLF-

You seem to like the 2500. Enjoy it for a while. No need to chase tube rolling just yet anyway. Some folks actually prefer the stock Mc tubes.

Thanks! I know in my head you’re right. That was part of my hesitance with going to a tube preamp, rolling. Always chasing the “perfect” sound. But at least I’ve gotten to what I’ve heard from many, the nice tube/ss setup. Thanks again.

I think tube rolling can get out of control, personally I put Gold Lions in and didn't look back until recently where I picked up a different pair to try in my line stage. Problem is it's such a pain unhooking all the cables I haven't swapped them in yet. I'd also second just enjoying it for now, keep an eye out for some tube sales and try them out when the time is right. It is fun to browse some of the sellers and see the 50+ year old NOS tubes they manage to find, though.

I found out that while the left 4 tubes are the original Mc tubes, the two on the right, which I believe are for the amp (?) are from Mazda. I looked them up and they're like $159 each! has anyone else ever heard of these?

I've seen them around, no personal experience. Sometimes I wonder how much the pricing in based on quality vs rarity. Anyhow, sounds like your deal on that pre is even sweeter than you thought.

I've found that's the best way to enjoy this hobby, enjoy what you have instead of constantly chasing the next "upgrade".

Mazda, as are many Japanese tubes, are generally highly regarded. When you say they are "for the amp", assume you are referring to the phono-stage. Like Steve, I've had excellent results over the years with Gold Lion tubes, when the time comes.

C2500 and Gold Lions, as good as it gets, to my 502 Y/O ears anyhow. Though the C2700 is out, I have no reason or need to upgrade, although the upgradable digital section in the new preamp is a game changer for those worried about obsolescence. I use mine with a MX135 in pass thru mode, best of all analog and digital worlds for me..
