I use system defaults and at this time see no reason to alter the settings. If you by chance have the louder fan, you can adjust this setting within the bios.

A suggestion, use your smart phone or take screenshots of each bios screens. This way, you have record of the settings. What I do not know is if any of these settings are de facto or custom configured by Autonomics/McIntosh. See example bio screens here: MB100 BIOS Screen instructions

Erratic behavior as an example only [I do not specifically know the MB100 logic board error messages nor the software messages once the MB100 boots]:
  • Invalid configuration will appear on your screen.
  • Run Setup appears on your screen.
  • Press F1 to continue appears on your screen.
  • Invalid drive specification appears on the screen after you've pressed F1.
  • Clock Error or Clock Message appears on your screen.
  • The clock on the computer loses time.
  • The computer is constantly showing the wrong date.

Again, a big caveat, the above is just an example an may never show up on the MB100 and very well may have the unique error/behaviors. But, this is just an example. I need to call Chuck again and see about getting the white paper on the logic board and if there is any know error message documentation.

What you can do is search the internet using key words: bios/cmos battery dead/dying, signs your bios/cmos better needs to be replaced, etc.

Folks, I am upgrading my RAM to the maximum the logic board supports [16GB/1600MHz]. I ordered the following from Amazon.

16GB RAM

Why?...just for fun and why not. The CL rating is the same as the 8GB that I already added. Just bumping up 8 more GB. The RAM cost came down significantly so I jumped on it.

David, notice immediate improvements since upgrading the RAM?

To 16? I do not know yet. I just purchased it. However, I dd notice dramatic improvement moving from 2GB to 8GB.

As it is, there is no delay or sluggishness with my MB100. I removed the bottleneck and that's the subpar performing drives and minimal ram that the unit was stocked with.

16GB RAM Upgrade Complete. I replaced the two 4GB modules with 8GB.

Kingston HyperX Impact Black 16GB Kit (2x8GB) 1600MHz DDR3L CL9 SODIMM 1.35V Laptop Memory (HX316LS9IBK2/16)

It's too early to tell if there is an improvement. And if there is, it's marginal at best. But, I upgraded just to see if anything would happen. And, it was fun, while it lasted.

Smile Thank you for good advice!

Golucid, you were so inspiring that I decided to repeat MB100 improvement with better drives and larger RAM. After work was done everything works much faster and more smoothly. Here is the replacement parts overview:

Before upgrade:

RAM: Crucial 2GB DDR3
SSD: Kingston SSDNow 30GB
HDD: Western Digital Green 1TB

After upgrade:

RAM: 2 x Hynix 8GB DDR3
SSD: Samsung SSD 850 Pro 128GB
SSD: Samsung SSD 850 Pro 1TB

Thank You for good advice!

CONGRATULATIONS, MOCARTS5!

I am so excited for you. I am really pleased to read that you were able to replicated my instructions with success . Even better that it does work much more smoothly once you remove the bottlenecks: Drives and RAM.

Continue keep us all posted about your upgrade and welcome to the MB100 brotherhood

Congrats!

I think I need to PM Dan because this is all way off topic. We need an MB100: PSU thread.

All in all, the changes I made as said above, transformed the unit and for me at least, worthwhile. I no longer have a complaint about the MB100... well. The APP needs some work... but that is an entirely different post.
For almost 7000.00 retail this thing is almost embarrassingly cheap inside with lowest common denominator components. Over on the Bang and Olufsen forum I frequently get after the subset of users over there who don't care that B&O is offing production from Denmark to the Czech Republic and China even in some of their outrageously higher than the competition priced gear categories since it just means more profit for B&O, not some requirement just to stay alive (other operational problems are at fault there). I often cite McIntosh as a good example of a company who has pride in their building techniques and US production. But this thing would get my argument thrown right back at me.

I understand that being based on what is essentially a full blown PC, the PC components are gonna be made in China, can't get away from that. But the stinginess on that cheap 30GB SSD and putrid 2GB worth of RAM is a little appalling at the unit's price and being just a YEAR old product.

Thank you for contributing here with such a concise and detailed post. I'll keep an eye out for these when more of them hit the used market and perhaps perform these same upgrades straight away before I even bother connecting the thing up. This is what makes forums such a great exchange of ideas.
