Sennheiser HD800 Ear & Headband

A few months ago I began to notice small black grit on my head after listening. The grit was coming from the ear & headband cushion. After 6 years the ear & headband cushion needed replaced.

HD800 Headband Cushion: 534406

Besides comfort, and the elimination of the black grit from the deteriorated cushions I was not expecting an improvement in sound. What I believe has contributed to the improved sound is that I now have a better seal around my ears. The bass is more defined, authoritative, and the soundstage is more pin point. I'll be replacing those HD800 ear cushions much earlier next time, or when I suspect I hear a sonic change.

This isn't an illusion. Most headphone cushions deteriorate over time and as they do, change not only the distance to the ear, the seal around the ear. The effects are insidious and usually unnoticeable until you replace them for cosmetic reasons. Great post!

Don.......That was a fast six years since the introduction of the Sennheiser HD800. I had to double check because it didn't seem that long ago, but sure enough it was. Did you order the ear cushions and headband cushion direct from Sennheiser? What are the prices?

Dan, it was a fast 6 years. Ordered directly from Sennheiser.

I believe that Sennheiser have improved the ear cushions of the latest production of the HD800 so I would make sure they are the latest type and not one that has been in stock for several years
