If you use Roon, you won’t see any of that. Just disregard what you don’t like and enjoy what you like. As others pointed out, hip hop is where the money is flowing. It is what it is. |

nicoff,
I agree that I could just ignore it, and I have for a very long time. But, what I don't like, I don't like. i.e. Looking at a beautiful mountain from the other side of a sewage treatment plant kind of kills the scene and stinks too. Why should I pay for that? And therefore, I spoke up and told Tidal about to get rid of the sewage plant. Roon is app a 2K investment if I purchase the lifetime subscription and the Roon Nucleus Music Server. And Aurender and Roon don't get along to well. Though Aurender can be controlled thru Roon using Airplay, doesn't this limit one to 16 bit 44k only? So, for me it's just wiser to change to another company. Or perhaps the better solution is to skip streaming all together and go back to spinning CDs full time instead of part time - a new Luxman player is on it's way.

Tidal and its Hip-Hop Emphasis
Quote:
I agree that Aurender and Roon don't play nice together. The one way that I know that you can use Roon with Aurender is getting a Roon Endpoint that has a digital output. Then you feed the digital signal to the Aurender. But that still requires an investment in a Roon license ($500 lifetime) and a Roon Endpoint (less than $100 for a raspberry pi +HAT version). That gets you 24/192 max. I think I read somewhere that Aurender supports Qobuz, so maybe that's a better option than Tidal for you. Of course none of that makes a difference if you are set on spinning CDs. |

I don't think Tidal or Qobuz are profitable yet, so I wouldn't get too attached to either one of them. It's kind of like getting attached to your favorite Game of Thrones character - it won't end well for you.
But clearly Qobuz is the audiophile choice. From the president of Qobuz US, Dan Mackta “Qobuz is aimed directly at the small percentage of listeners who value audio quality, first and foremost. Beyond that, we try to super-serve these fans by curating new music releases, playlists, and original editorial content that will appeal to them. Also, we work directly with the world’s foremost hi-fi equipment manufacturers to bring the quality of lossless and Hi-Res music to their customers with the ease and convenience afforded by streaming.” Here is the Tidal Declaration for comparison. "Every movement throughout history began with a few individuals banding together with a vision, a vision to change the status quo. That vision came to life with a first step. Our first step begins today through the platform TIDAL. TIDAL is an artist majority owned company with a mission to reestablish the value of music, the protection of the sustainability of the music industry rooted in creativity and expression. Just as our vision is to introduce change to the current system, during the upcoming months we will continue to expand this platform into an all-encompassing destination. We are working diligently everyday to enhance the overall service. Today, the site encompasses high quality sound, video, exclusive editorial but there are more features on the way. In time, TIDAL will be not just a streaming service but a platform with enhanced experiences. With TIDAL we are making a commitment to build a platform that reflects ideas contributed directly from artists, providing an enriched experience. Music presented and heard the way the artists intended. We want our mission with TIDAL to spark conversation and lay a foundation for tomorrow’s burgeoning star. Our movement is being led by a few inviting all to band together for a common cause, a movement to change the status quo… Today marks the next step …" What I find interesting is that there is no mention of customers anywhere in the Tidal declaration whereas the Qobuz quote is all about us, the consumers. Interesting. Tom

Well, Tidal (T) sent me a very brief Satisfaction Survey for a question they didn't even answer. I feel sure it was an automated response, but it goes to show that they really don't care what a customer thinks or even may suggest. They consider a non-answer a closed issue. So, ultimately their business-model doesn't mesh with my listening-model.
So, it's time to hipity-hop right on out of T for Q. A post above (thanks W9TR) inspired me to study Qobuz (Q). From what their CS told me - very quick answers BTW - they allow the listener to select their own genre(s) and they advertise accordingly. From reviewing their album selections they have app 80% of what I enjoy listening too on T and it is still a growing platform ... Generally speaking what I understand is their Jazz and Classical selection will probably surpass T, while their Classic Rock is still catching up with T. And in doing a lot of reading this weekend I discovered that the quality of their music is up there and possibly even surpass T (MQA) on some albums. So, a 30 day free Q trail is in order. #RIPHIPHOP

I am ditching my Tidal subscription this month. I couldn’t care less about the volume of music advantage, even in classic rock, that Tidal has. After using both for 6 months, Qobuz seems to be bringing out all the same new music (in the genres I like) just as fast as Tidal. There is so much great music available now, I can live with missing out on a few recordings that I might be asked to play by a guest.
