Arcam had Ring DAC technology in a couple of players back in the early 2000's. I had one for a while and it sounded great. The FMJCD23 was reviewed by Stereophile back in 2000 and the reviewer bought the review sample. I'm sure that the newer dCS versions are far better, but the concept was available back then and did sound very good for its time.

If I remember correctly the ring DAC's as used by Arcam were supplied by dCs, I had the CD-92T, great player at the time.

According to the '25 year dCS Story' brochure, dCS Ring DAC technology (in chip form) was licensed to Arcam for their Alpha 9 CD player and their FMJ CD23.
The '25 year dCS Story' brochure continues: "The world’s hi-fi press was beguiled, saying the new Arcam Ring DAC players had a unusually smooth, open, clean and even sound. Reflecting the different standards that dCS works to, Andy McHarg remembers it with less enthusiasm. “The Ring DAC on a chip was a bit too noisy to be a dCS product,” he says sniffily." Martin |

CD 92 T also had the Ring DAC technology.
From the Arcam Website: "The CD92 adds a sophisticated output module, incorporating an ultra low jitter master clock and the custom built dCS** Ring DAC circuitry from the FMJ CD23. The Ring DAC combines the low level linearity of bitstream converters with the clean ultrasonic-free output of the best multibit converters, and delivers near 24 bit resolution with negligible differential non-linearity. Digital filtering is provided by the latest Pacific Microsonics PMD200 24 bit digital signal processor, which also decodes HDCD recordings. The module has extra power regulation on board to minimize interaction between stages and is constructed with a four layer circuit board to ensure optimized grounding and the shortest possible signal paths." Was my first "better" CD player, it replaced a Technics CD player, first time that I experienced a bit of separation and placement in the soundstage at home. Must be at least 20 years ago when I had the Arcam with a Ring DAC, and stil have one in my dCs Rossini, I guess I like the technology :-)

I also had a FMJCD23 back in the day. Very smooth and organic sounding as opposed to most other digital back then. Sold it after I ripped my CD collection to NAS. I remember thinking too bad it didn’t have any digital inputs.
