Default Beyond Meat

I've been following the Beyond Meat stock since the IPO. It has roughly doubled in a short period of time.

Of course I needed to try their offerings. For those not familiar, the Beyond Meat is a 100% plant derived alternative to red meat. Similar texture to beef but the flavor I had to find out...

Beyond Burger Ingredients: Water, pea protein isolate, expeller-pressed canola oil, refined coconut oil, contains 2% or less of the following: cellulose from bamboo, methylcellulose, potato starch, natural flavor, maltodextrin, yeast extract, salt, sunflower oil, vegetable glycerin, dried yeast

Well, I wasn't sure what to expect from a product largely catered to the younger Mocha-Latte sipping, Tweetering, Instagraming, Facebooking, social media Ninja Warrior crowd....

But back to business at hand. Heat set to medium high on the grill, 3 minutes per side and they are done.

Texture is indeed very similar to Beef. Flavor, well, it does have a hint of beef flavor but I doubt anyone would confuse it with real beef. Overall I was pretty impressed, it is pretty tasty and satisfies hunger without the often heavy feeling after eating red meat . For those looking to break the habit of eating red meat, this certainly is a rather tasty alternative. I think the company has a future.

My wife was not as thrilled with it and said she would prefer the real beef burger the way I always grill them.... Can't please them all...

One thing for sure, having a slice of the unreasonably and unfairly delicious Apple Cinnamon Strudel, baked fresh by the hard working and kind-hearted Amish bakers, (We are fortunate to be not too far from the Amish communities) made us forget all about the Plant Based Burger we ate 10 min before we had Strudel and Coffee....

Has anyone else tried the Beyond Meat products? What are your thoughts?

Serge, there are more and more very tasty vegetarian an vegan options.
As a non meat eater, I'm very pleased with that.

But... there is a big but.
Many of those burgers contain taste enhancers.
There are so many dirty tricks in the food industry.
Monosodium glutamate, a neurotoxic, for example can have dozens of names.
We are lied to and it is all still legal.
Yeast extract is monosodium glutamate!

Most customers will think they buy a very healthy product, but in my experience - I check every label! - 70-80% of the veggie burgers contain taste enhancers.

Good to know Bart, thanks for the info. I’m not a vegetarian, so many conflicting reports and articles on just about every topic that my motto in life has long been “everything in moderation”. I do have relatives that are strictly vegetarian and they are thrilled with their diets and look and feel great.

Serge, I'm not a vegetarian, I still eat swimming animals.

I know not everybody will agree on the yeast extract being MSG.
There is also yeast extract that is obtained from healthy sources, but when you read it on the food label, you can never be sure which was the source.

My wife and I are very sensitive to the 'Chinese Restaurant Syndrome'.
When the composition of veggie bouillon we always used changed without us knowing, we were always feeling sick after eating our fresh soup.
I examined the label: yeast extract!
Since then, my wife makes her own bouillon with home dried vegetables, herbs, Himalayan salt and oil. Energising!

I have nightmares about Chinese Restaurants in big cities to this day having worked 1 day as a dishwasher in one... I was 15 and it was my first part time job. The things I saw there will haunt me for the rest of my life. I quit after the first day. I'm not going to go into details... Let's just say I can count on one hand the number of times I ate at a Chinese Restaurant. I know its just me and they are NOT all like that.

Now, Sushi is different. But that also has its risks in the form of possibility of exposure to heavy metals like mercury from the fish and parasites during the summer late spring through early fall. Months that do not have an "R" in them are parasite months and stay away form sushi months for us.

I will agree on the fact that home cooked meals from organic and fresh veggies/produce in general really is best. This is how we mostly eat at home. I don't go out to restaurants very often. My wife can't tolerate the heavy meals and over the years I have also felt that non-home cooked meals are just too heavy for me. I had one of my favorite Philadelphia Cheesesteaks about a year ago (and I used to eat them at least a few times a month) and thought I would die!

Sorry I assumed you are a Vegetarian rather than a non-meat eater.

Kelly and I have reduced our red meat and processed meat consumption significantly. We eat a lot of vegetable protein and seafood. The beyond meat burgers are pretty good if you jazz them up a little.

Mostly though we like products that don’t try to mimic red meat - things like Seitan, Tofu, and especially Tempeh.

From Mayl to October we go on a 90 percent plant based diet. We eat Eggs During the very hot Texas summers my energy level is much better now. But as September winds down I look forward to a big juicy steak!
