I agree 100%, It's very sad to me that the norm always seems to be the lowest common denominator.

Keep in mind that less than 1% of the population can afford to play in the audio hobby, even at the lowest levels of those of us that frequent this forum (such as myself). To 99% of the population, a few thousand dollars for an entire audio/video system is considered substantial or "nuts". To 99% of the people, an ipod with even a mediocre set of headphones is the best audio they have ever heard, or desire to hear, by a substantial margin.
Then consider the fact that very few of the 1% left even give a hoot about audio as a hobby and you can see that even mid-fi manufacturers are trying to appeal to a very small audience. And many of the folks who may venture into the hobby are quickly turned off by the complexity of it all. For example, suppose a novice shows up here and asks a silly question like "what cables should I hook my system up with". Between the diverging opinion about how cables "sound" and the crazy amounts of money that can be spent, it makes most peoples head explode. Which makes me wonder why any high end manufacturer would want to be in a selling environment that caters to 99% of the population who "don't get" audio as a hobby. Seems to me that the only way to appeal to the few of us that enjoy audio as a hobby would be the stand alone specialty dealer. But apparently those dealers have not figured out how to adapt to todays market place and customer since so many have fallen by the wayside.

A little offshoot of your post. On my return flight from RMAF I sat next to one of the co-founders of a well known cable company. As Kevin points out there are so many choices for cables out there but what this gentleman told me was that all those companies are fighting for 10% of the market. Monster owns 90% of the market. That is an up-hill battle. Jim |
