I think Dan is wrestling with temptation, however there's a thought process here too, and it might not add up to scoring 2301s... A couple times he's pondered letting go of the 275s because the studio is packed full of gear, and it's original intent was for recording/jam sessions. The fact that the 275s remain is a testament to his high satisfaction-level already obtained, and there's a premium on available studio space. Could he get more satisfaction out of the 2301s? That's a no-brainer, but the 2301s are rather massive and they might not fit right in the music studio. Will Dan change-out his beloved 501s? IMO satisfaction-level is extremely high there too, he probably won't want to mess around with that system's awesome synergy. Maybe Dan will come up with some clever ideas for a studio re-org to accomodate the 2301's, but I'm betting against it...

I have an elegant solution ..... Dan buys the 2301's ..... and keeps them at my house.

I will even warm them up regularly.

Brad.......You have come about as close to my current way of thinking as anyone. No doubt, I am drawn to the MC2301's like a moth to a light bulb. No Dan, don't look at the light!!!

Still, I am getting great satisfaction from both my main system upstairs, and the two channel tube system in the studio. This makes it difficult to justify $22K to put a pair of 2301's into either system. Yes, I know I can offset that figure by selling some gear, like the MC275's, or the C1000C/T, or maybe the entire two channel tube system in the studio. I am still thinking about that. When it comes to selling gear, I have many options, providing that is a way I would want to go.

As you well know, it is never as simple as just bringing home new amplifiers, at least not for me. I have to consider many aspects to owning 2301 amps. My first consideration would have to be which system gets the amps. I would prefer them in the main system driving the PMC EB1i's. The next thing to consider is space in the Salamander Twin 40 rack. I would have to remove the two PPP's from the shelves above the 501's, and remove those shelves in order to have the additional space required to fit the MC2301's into the rack. Then I have to decide what to do with the two PPP's. I could move them to the top of the Salamander rack where my Micro Seki turntable and the server monitor now reside, but then I'll have to purchase and install the Salamander bridge accessory for the Twin 40 rack to go over the top of the PPP's so that I will still have a place for my turntable and server monitor to sit. One thing leads to another.

Beyond those considerations I have to think of the hours I keep the main system energized, which is typically about 14 hours per day, or approximately 5100 hours per year. Considering power tubes usually last between 5000 and 6000 hours before needing to be replaced, that means I would be re-tubing the MC2301's every year at $800.00 a shot. So the care and feeding of a pair of MC2301 amplifiers has to be factored into any decision I make about owning them.

Despite all of the above, I am considering purchasing a pair of MC2301 amps, but that's not new news. I have been considering this fine amplifier since my eyes first fell upon its beauty and owner's reviews like Serge's inflammatory write up began to appear. I mean, what's not to like about the McIntosh MC2301? Am I going to jump on a pair of them next week? Not likely, unless some kind of sweetheart deal just falls into my lap. More likely I will continue to lust for them, and perhaps eventually make the decision to bring a pair home.

Reading Serge's review last night did the same thing to all of us. It made our heads spin. Mine is still spinning. I won't deny my unbridled desire to own a pair of the MC2301 amplifiers, but all the planets are yet to be properly aligned for my impulsive eagerness to be acted upon.

Dan,
You just have to come to Paris for a small visit of the city of Lights.
I will show you the Lights of the 2301's and you'll place your order from my home !!!

Jérôme.......I think that you are correct. Were I to hear the MC2301's driving the PMC EB1i speakers I would be pushed over the edge, and my resistance would vanish. I have never doubted anything you have said to describe the pleasure of listening to this combination.
