Cremona M Room Placement

Yesterday I listened to the Cremona M's. They were powered with McIntosh 601's and a C50 pre. I had heard Cremona's before and always liked their sound. Yesterday, however, the bass sounded really boomy and muddy. I asked the dealer if he could move them away from the wall and closer together. They were over 9' apart. He didn't think they needed to be moved and I didn't feel like pushing it. The rear ports were about 12 or 13" from the wall.

For those who own these speakers how far from the back wall do you have them? Does the rear port make placement from the rear wall more important?

I guess I'm asking if they need more space than a front ported or a sealed cabinet? The dealer was giving me some formula between 8 - 12" is okay then comes a dead spot, then bla bla.. It just sounded boomy and wandering how far off the wall they need. My wife doesn't want speakers way out in the room.

Unfortunately there is no absolute in speaker placement, your ears will let you know when it is right.

9 feet apart in and of itself really doesn't mean anything. Need much more info. Cremonas often end up that far apart depending on room or listening position.


'Tis not a formula but a general range where close coupling can work nicely. After that you will hit a dead zone where nothing works right. Once you clear the dead zone the speaker will begin to open up, extend in the bass and become more linear.

Where these points occur have to do with the geometry of the room and its furnishings and how the speaker "sees" the room acoustically. Every speaker is unique in the way it couples to a room. Cremonas don't need more space from the wall but a rear ported speaker will be affected by changes in rake and toe in close to a wall more than a front ported or sealed unit will. Doesn't mean it can't be done, you just have more to consider to get it right.

And don't think set up is approximate. An inch is as good as a mile in proper speaker set up.

Good information guys thanks. I thought the 9' apart was too much. The speakers were not coupling and in order to make a eq triangle. My seat seat was up against speakers on the other side of the room. Anyway the rear venting was really my concern because I've heard the Cramona's sound really good in other rooms.

Hey Rick.

I've owned my Cremona M's for about 2 years now and let me tell you, I feel your pain, friend.

What Bill has said couldn't be further from the truth....and that can be really frustrating. Place these speakers right, and bam, the bass is dynamic and powerful, mids are smooth as 18yr old Scotch and highs are clear and detailed.

Place them wrong, bass goes bye bye, mids are flat and highs are a bit shrilly.
My pleasure to throw in my 2 cents to try and help you find that sweet spot.

First, tell me a bit about your room. What are the room dimensions, is it a dedicated listening room.
From the work you've done so far, where have you found the best combination of bass, mids and highs.

The room is 15" wide with a vaulted ceiling. I don't have too much flexibility to move further from the wall because of the area rug. Bigger speakers will have even less wiggle room. I'm hoping to upgrade my speakers. I considered the Cremona's mostly because I know I like the SF sound. I'm interested in the Canton's and also the Aerial 7T's but have not heard them anywhere let alone in a room like mine.
