Fortunately, after six years I have finally settled on four systems I am thoroughly satisfied with so I have slowed way down.

The list below is gear I sold over the past six years.

McIntosh - MC300, MC352, MC501 (2) MC601 (2), MC275 MkV (3), C40, C42, C2200, C2300, C1000C/T, MCD7009, MCD205, MCD301, MCD500 (2), MCD1100 (2), MEN220, MR7084, MR85, MR88.

Misc. - Linn Ikemi, Nakamichi CR-7A, Shure V15 Type VxMR, Ortofon 2M Black, Kimber 8TC, Tributaries Silver IC's, PS Audio Power Plant Premier (2), Sennheiser HD580, Sennheiser HD600, Musical Fidelity X-Can V8P, HeadAmp Gilmore Lite, Yamaha RX-V2700.

Speakers - JBL EON10 G2, JBL Control 5, Infinity C360 Center, Definitive Technology BP2000, Sonus faber Cremona Auditor, Sonus faber Guarneri Memento.
Yes, this place is dangerous.

I have only bought in the past year and a half except for giving away my 30 yr old Bose 901's. Does that make me selfish?

Anyway, the forums are the root of the evil and we have the king of the puppet masters!!!

This is a serious question. I admit it is based upon my personal philosophy.

How does someone maximize system performance--read that synergy--when the system is a Rubik's Cube?

If you love gear then changing is the game. If you love music, then changing gear (a lot) is a losing game.

I prefer to start with speakers and then build from there. Speakers and the room act like a system anchor for me. Then I carefully build from there.

Works for me. It may be a better path for others as well considering how many comments (and threads) there are on regrets about gear sold too soon.

I think we all love music or we wouldn't care. My goal with the equipment is attempting to make the music I love sound as accurate and wonderful as possible. I agree that the speakers are the first thing I try and get right. I also believe that as long as the speaker or component is broken in you can tell if you like it or you don't rather quickly. A losing game is really only the name if you buy new and then yeah your losing big with each sell. If buying new you really need a dealer in your corner who will let you home demo equipment. Without the dealer you end up with lists of equipment. A lot of my previous equipment purchases (almost all) were completely blind buys. I read reviews and the price was right so I went for them. Oddly the only piece of gear I had actually demoed at a dealers were the dynaudios and they were the very first hifi speaker i had ever heard. By the time I purchased them 7 years or so later I had already owned and lived with speakers I now believe to sound better (to me) so they went back up for sale. SO as you can see part of the gear swap coaster is due to wanting to see what the fuss is about with certain gear and finding out if you agree or not.
